We’ve all noticed it – the large majority of cars during peak hours with only one person in them. A survey we conducted recently revealed that 70% of cars crossing the Spit Bridge each morning are single occupancy. If you exclude parents taking their children to school, this figure would be 90%.
Although traffic problems will remain while public transport is inadequate, if more people shared rides with friends or neighbours, it would make journeys quicker and reduce environmental damage.
That's why we've created Car-Pool Connect!
If you’re interested in sharing a ride to work with your neighbour, simply post a brief comment including:
- the time you leave for work;
- the area you live (e.g. Eastern Hill, Fairlight, North Curl Curl);
- your email address.
You can then get in touch with others who make a similar journey and perhaps arrange to be at a nearby bus stop to catch a ride.
Leaving your car at home one day a week to car-pool from Manly to the CBD and back would save 450kg in greenhouse gases each year (based on figures from the Australian Conservation Foundation).
Car-pooling not only allows you to take advantage of the transit lane and get to work quicker; it also cuts petrol use and pollution.
