Fix the Spit Run

March 26 - Member for Manly, Mike Baird, has tied with the car in the annual Spit Run Challenge to see which is faster in the morning peak.

“It’s the third year I have done the “Fix the Spit” run, and I have promised to do it every year until a solution is found for the congestion on the Spit Bridge.

“I won the first race, the car beat me last year, but it was a dead heat today.”

Mike completed the run from Balgowlah Boys High School to the Oaks Hotel in a personal best time of 30 minutes 38 seconds.

“The run is a reminder that two years ago the Labor Government was re-elected promising to fix the Spit, but once in office the plan was quickly abandoned.  Commuters from the Northern Beaches deserve better. Today is the half way mark until the next state election

“It’s a waste of people’s time, their money, not to mention the impact on the environment, to be stuck every day in this traffic jam. We can’t wait another two years before something is done

“I have met with the Minister for Roads, Michael Daley, and was assured the Department is examining the current proposal put forward which includes a tunnel and improved public transport.

“I will continue to encourage the Department to do the proper analysis to ensure a long term and sustainable solution is found.  Importantly, public transport must be a key element.

The proposal, prepared by Macquarie Bank and the Sensible Transport Action Group, recommends a short tunnel from the Spit Bridge to the Warringah Freeway at Cammeray and requires no financial contribution from the Government.

“The Spit corridor is the second slowest road in the State, with an average speed of 26km per hour, so any proposal to reduce journey times must be analysed,’ Mr Baird said.

Spit run
You'd be much better off on a bike, Mike.
You would get there much faster, breathe much less pollution by taking back streets and set an achievable example to all commuters.
Public transport is still an expensive, energy intensive and dirty alternative. Cycling is clean, healthy, practically free and, above all, fun.
All the best

Hey, it's a stunt BUT it's a good one!
And it shows you're not trying for a heart attack soon (though the exhaust fumes wouldn't have done you any good).
This is worth a media release that puts this corridor in perspective with the development history of the northern beaches (N. B.) w.r.t. the rest of Sydney and the (lack of) growth in transport options in and out of the area. During the 1930s depression they mined the Curl Curl sand dunes to build Pittwater Road. It not only created jobs, it produced a great public asset, worth many times its original cost to the community.
What we have now is the pressure of "urban consolidation" without any complementary upgrading of transport. Even without any train system, buses have not had any noticeable increase of frequency in four DECADES!
Even without any population increase, we have to deal with the fact that most families now have two people working, so the demand for transport is up. Add to that the broader definition of working hours and it is not just transport in traditional peak hours that needs to be addressed, it's everything between 5am and 3am.

The bridge to Castlecrag plan was conveniently binned and the land sold off at great profit. Yet there was not a murmur of what we were going to do without it. It doesn't matter if you can afford to run and park a car, if the roads are crammed with others doing likewise, only the Packer helicopter will make the trip out of the N. B. quicker!
Whether you agree with the global warming theory or not, there is also the issue of the world running out of crude oil sources. Biofuel is not a cheap or efficient option - by taking land from food crops, we will find basic foods becoming more expensive. So we simply must reduce our dependence on cars, no matter how wealthy this Labor state government thinks we are.

Cycling
Yes, cycling is part of the answer, but in the hilly Spit area it is definitely only for the very fit. I have a great dedicated cycleway to my workplace 6km away in Brisbane's south-west, but it still takes unfit me half an hour to use it, and I need to cool down and have a shower before I can start work - that is 3/4 hour taken, against 8 minutes in a car. Plus the water for an extra (4-minute) shower each day.
It is also not much use when you have shopping or in windy or wet weather. And the road surface needs to be free of potholes and loose gravel, or you end up with damaged cyclists.
Still, Brisbane is streets ahead (pardon the pun) of Sydney in cycleways - plus there is a new centre in the CBD where cyclists can leave their gear and shower before going to work.

Run Mike Run...........
Good on you Mike, hopefully you won`t have to keep on running to prove your point, but i wouldn`t hold your breath. How many years have we been asking for the Spit to be fixed but in on deaf ears. I commend your determination to wake them up into action. By the way, you look good in the shorts ( Maybe we will keep you running ). Cheers Debra.

SPit run
Mike
Keep the pressure up. It is clear that 95% of cars on the Spit are occupied by 1 person. This is the same as my commute each day to Hornsby from Balgowlah. There is just no other viable option for transport. I recommend that there is a Sydney-wide transport plan encompassing buses, trains, park and ride, bikes and cars.

SPit run
Mike I agree and Alicia the Ferries are also better in Brissie albeit the new Fast Ferry is helping to raise the standard.

Happy for you both to join me next year.
Cheers
Mike
