Manly's Earth Hour 09 Challenge

March 17 - The Manly community is being challenged to have the largest number of people in one postcode area signed on for Earth Hour 09.

Member for Manly Mike Baird says, “I know how much people care about the environment and want to make a difference. This is a simple way of showing it.

“When you sign on for Earth Hour online – you need to include your Manly postcode.  I want us to have the highest number of registrations.

“We want Manly to be in darkness at 8.30pm on 28 March.

“We live in such a wonderful place where the environment is part of our lives, whether it be the beach, the surf, the Harbour, or the natural environment of North Head.

“Turning off the lights for one hour reminds us how our everyday lives impact on the environment.  It also sends a strong message to all political leaders of all political persuasions that action is required to protect the environment.

“If it means we then remember to switch off the lights each time we leave a room that will make a real difference beyond the event.

“But hopefully it has an even greater impact and making us reassess our carbon footprint and think of ways we can reduce it.

Earth Hour started in Sydney just two years ago when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights.  It is now a world wide event, with the goal of 1 billion people taking part across 80 countries.

“Earth Hour can be a great excuse for a little fun.  Why not take the opportunity for a romantic candle light dinner?

“I encourage everyone in Manly to be a part and demonstrate their support for the environment and understand that every little bit counts,” Mr Baird said.
