March 11 - Member for Manly, Mike Baird, has called on the NSW Government to halt the proposed sale of land adjacent to Quarry Reserve in North Manly.
“To sell it for development just shows how desperate the Government has become to sell up every scrap of land in a grab for cash, without considering the environmental and community concerns.
“I have raised the matter today in State Parliament, calling on the Government to withdraw the sale and accept the proposal put forward by Warringah Council to make the land designated as a Reserve Trust.
“Warringah Council would then care for, control and manage the land.
“This appears to be an appropriate compromise so that the land is preserved as part of Quarry Reserve.
“I have had a number of people contacting my office concerned about the sale and loss of open space.
“One touching email was from five year old Emily Morgan -
‘Dear Mr Baird, please stop the sale now!’
“Children need open space to run around and play.
“Too often that land is being sold up for development and the concerns and needs of children are not even considered.
“Importantly, Quarry Reserve is also home to a wide range of wildlife which will be affected if this parcel of land is developed.
“The NSW Government needs to scrap the sale and leave the land as open space as part of Quarry Reserve, for the benefit of the local community and to protect the native wildlife,” said Mr Baird.
