Tough Alcohol Strategy From Mayors Welcome

Tues 26 May - Member for Manly, Mike Baird, has welcomed the lead position from Manly Council in uniting with other Sydney coastal Councils to tackle the ongoing problems from late night drinking.

“Despite the grandstanding from the State Government that it is tackling the issue, the problems of anti-social behaviour from alcohol abuse around clubs and hotels is continuing.

“In fact, the State Government has made the situation worse, with impractical rules which have led hotels in Manly to abandon what had been a successful local strategy.

“As a community we had worked together to reduce the incidence of violence from late night drinking, but that strategy fell apart when the State Government introduced its new rules.

“This latest approach by Councils of Manly, Pittwater, Warringah, Randwick, Sutherland and Waverley to lobby for a 2am closing time is positive.

“Congratulations to Manly Mayor Jean Hay, for being involved in this approach and trying to find a solution.

“I encourage the State Government to listen to these Councils and agree to their request”, Mr Baird said.

Under the proposal, hotels and clubs in beachside areas from Manly to Palm Beach would have a 2am closing.

They are also requesting additional police resources, education funding and improved public transport.

Response to Mike's press release on Alc
Hi Mike
Your press release refers to the "impractical rules" of the govt. I don't get a chance to keep up with all the news, but I do read your press releases. Love the reduction to 2am, although I'd be a HUGE fan of 11pm!! How has the current govt made things impractical? Thanks so much.
Warm regards, Jeanette Harris

2am Closing
What about people who are very capable of staying out beyond 2 am and who don't get drunk and disorderly? is this a sledgehammer to crack a nut or is the nanny state just running rampant!

pub drinking hour reduction
fully support councils efforts-it should be 12 midnight-latest.

Pubs
I have a radical idea - how about getting the pubs that make massive profits from flogging the grog to pay for the transport, cleanup and security -

Manly alcohol strategy
Instead of penalising businesses and other responsible drinkers by forcing licensed premises to close - voluntarily or otherwise - at 2am, how about making it policy that any offenders (offences to be publicly listed) be banned from ALL alcohol serving establishments in the area they offended (and perhaps publicly named in the press). This will soon get rid of the rowdy element and let those who want to drink in peace have a fun night and business can trade properly without the minority spoiling it for the vast majority. ALL establishments would need to PROPERLY enforce the ban and not to let offenders in (there can be a list with names & photos on the door of each establishment)... if they can trade longer, and hence make more money, I would imagine they would be amenable to proper enforcement...

Closing times for Pubs
How about pubs staying open after 2am - but no alcohol sold after that time, therefore people who want/need to sober up have the option of going home straight away - or staying out a bit (avoid the rush for cabs) drink water/isotonic drinks (marketed as hang-over cures) and have food. Then close everything at 3am?

Alcohal
I support the initiative to cut off drinking earlier. 2am is a good start. I would prefer 11pm or 12 on weekdays and 12 or 1am on Fri/Sat. I am tired of hearing drunks yelling in the wee morning hours as they stagger home.

Pubs, 2am........
I support the 2am close, it is a shame others that don`t cause trouble must suffer but seriously 2am is late enough in manly. Well done Jean! Regards Debra.

re: alcohol
I live in manly, as i rareley drink and i found the bouncers too imposing i am happy that drinking has lessened in manly.

but i do fear the possible repocusions, like as less people are drinking the hotels will more than likley put up prices, this will turn into making the pubs more up market which will mean more yuppies, who i dont really think much of. they are arrogant up themselves spoilt ect...

I fear manly is turning into a yuppie playground and the old and new manly hippies, battlers and poor will eventually be squeezed out...

manly will lose its characture and kind spirit..

my great geat grandfather early last century owned half of manly!

we wont go down without a fight..
