“I know Ruth does not do her community work for recognition, however she deserves a heartfelt thank you,” said Mr Baird. “It is people like Ruth who make our community rock solid and the Northern Beaches a wonderful place to live.” For many years Ruth has volunteered with Lifeline at Dee Why, Meals on Wheels through Manly Hospital and the Harbord Community Library. Each week Ruth helps out at Harbord Public School, assisting students with their reading. She is an active member of her local church, St Peter’s Uniting Church in Freshwater, and has been involved with many outreaches. Ruth fundraises for many charities including the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child project in which Christmas gifts are packed for children in third world countries. Her friend Olive Grigg of Freshwater nominated Ruth for the Award so others could be inspired by her generosity. “Ruth is so modest – hardly anyone knows just what she does and has done,” said Olive. “In addition to all her community work, Ruth cares for her mother and babysits her grandchildren whenever she can,” Olive said. Mr Baird introduced the Community Hero Awards when he became Member for Manly in 2007 to acknowledge people who helped to bring the community together.
