Manly to be Proud of Diabetes Fight
Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Manly is leading the way in the fight against diabetes, with local diabetes sufferers raising their plight with NSW politicians and a new tool launched locally to help prevent and manage the disease, said Member for Manly Mike Baird.

“Manly should be proud of its proactive approach in reducing the impact of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, both of which are unfortunately becoming more common on the Peninsula,” Mr Baird said.

“This week I was inspired to see 8 year-old Chloe Douglas and 9 year-old Milly Yates visit Parliament to share with politicians their experience with type 1 diabetes.

“Chloe and Milly are in grade 3 but they demonstrate courage beyond their years. As Youth Ambassadors for juvenile diabetes, they were among 40 children who met with politicians to raise funds and awareness of a disease they will deal with for the rest of their lives.

“There are 140,000 Australians currently living with type 1 diabetes and half were diagnosed in their childhood.

“Although type 1 diabetes is not caused by lifestyle factors, there is the potential to control type 2 diabetes through diet and exercise.

“Local health worker George Wilson is keen for the community to be aware of a new tool, which was developed on the Peninsula to help people prevent and manage type 2 diabetes.

“The My Diabetes Care program is being trialled at Royal North Shore and helps patients access up-to-date support and information to manage type 2 diabetes. It is free to register and more information is available at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

“If local residents are concerned they may be at risk of type 2 diabetes, they should talk to their doctor or visit www.ausdrisk.com and fill out a quick questionnaire, which was recently developed by the Australian Government.

“There is no doubt health is essential for quality of life. As Member for Manly I am proud that residents of Manly are going that extra mile to improve the health of others.”

Diabetes Pump Machine
Mike, Your Parliamentary Address on this subject was most informative and educational. Is there any program in place to provide all Child sufferers with the pump machine? It sounds like the real way to go and would help a lot of kids.
