| Manly Welcomes Back New Fast Ferry |
|
Feb 10 - Commuters have today welcomed the return of a new fast ferry service to Manly, said local MP Mike Baird. “This is a victory for people power, with the service being returned in response to a committed campaign from the Northern Beaches community”, said Mr Baird. “The State Labor Government treated commuters with contempt when it dumped the Jet Cats service as part of last year’s mini-budget then failed to meet a commitment to increase the regular ferry service. “Ferry passengers were left clinging to stairwells with the services overloaded and unable to cope.” “But from the disappointment came the triumph. The community rallied, writing letters, signing petitions and forcing the NSW Government into a backdown to put the service out to tender. “I joined the regular commuters this morning on one of the first runs, and the response was very positive. “No doubt there will be some teething problems but I encourage people to try the service. “In the same spirit, I would also encourage the Maritime Union of Australia to put down its protest pamphlets and give the service a fair Aussie go. “Safety is a valid issue, however the company wouldn’t be allowed to operate without the proper qualifications. “I was pleased to see that the skipper this morning was a local who has 38 years maritime experience. “I am concerned that the union is more interested in playing politics in trying to undermine the service, rather than responding to the needs of the local community. “It’s also impressive to see that Bass & Flinders is also going to use smartcards for tickets so people don’t have to go scrambling for change.
