Memo to RTA: Don't Tell Us About the Traffic - Fix It!
Friday, 18 June 2010

The RTA plans to spend around $400,000 installing a huge sign in Seaforth to advise motorists there is traffic ahead despite there being no alternate route to avoid the traffic, Manly MP Mike Baird said today.

“This is a crazy idea – we don’t need the RTA to spend several thousand dollars telling us there’s traffic on the Spit – we get that – spend the money fixing the problem instead,” Mr Baird said.

This week the RTA informed residents on Thursday 24 June it would start building a Permanent Variable Message Sign between 72 and 74 Frenchs Forest Road Seaforth, which would be due for completion by late August 2010.

“This enormous sign will span across two traffic lanes in suburban Seaforth and will cost several thousand dollars to tell motorists what they already know.

“I will be calling on the Minister for Roads in Parliament next week to immediately halt plans to construct this sign and consider diverting the funds to fixing the traffic bottleneck at Seaforth roundabout.

“Once again the RTA has failed to consult the community on a proposal that is at best tinkering around the edges and at worst a complete waste of money.

“If you’re travelling on Frenchs Forest Road to the city you can’t avoid the Spit Bridge so what is the point in a sign telling you there’s traffic on the Spit?

“The RTA needs to demonstrate how this sign will help motorists and how it will alleviate traffic congestion before the taxpayer funds are spent.

“Several local residents have contacted my office this week expressing their bewilderment that the RTA would proceed with this sign in the absence of an alternate route.

“If you object to this sign and believe the funds would be better spent addressing the traffic flow, please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

“We are appealing to the RTA’s commonsense – spend the money fixing the problem, not on a sign stating the obvious.”

Seaforth Sign
It is unbelievable that the RTA would even think about that. We did ask for a slip road by the car park and the new pedestrian crossing. The RTA also said the would look at the traffic flow into Seaforth and look at the blockage caused by residents turning into Seaforth.

redundant and expensive RTA sign
I've lodged a request on RTA website asking it to reconsider this useless and wasteful sign. Good on you Mike for raising it with the Minister. We're behind you; the RTA is evidently keen to spend money in Seaforth (the unwanted and useless main street dividing fence cost $300,000) - why not on something useful and practical.

Spit Road
Mike,
The real delay is further along the journey to the city of a morning at Spit Junction. Once you get through Spit Junction the traffic moves more quickly. The money could be better spent on a bus interchange at Spit Junction both to improve traffic flow and to improve conditions for those who use the buses. Cheers, Allen Lakeman.

RTA sign Seaforth
All residents realise what a waste of money, but will the RTA listen? I suspect not. The funds would be much better allocated to the buidling of a pedestrian overpass down on the Spit, as this would provide a solution to some congestion in the morning, caused by the existing traffic lights. No doubt traffic congestion is getting worse on the Spit, we don't need a fancy sign to remind us of this!

RTA insanity
We all knew the inmates were in charge of the asylum, this is only further proof. The $400,000 may as well be burned to send up smoke signals to tell us there's traffic for all this sort of absurdity is worth. Bring on the election.

Stupidity!!!
One of the most unbelievable wastes of money I have ever heard of!
Spend the money on the Seaforth roundabout, spend the money on fixing the potholes on Military Rd, put the money towards resolving the traffic chaos going down to the Spit but don't spend it on a sign to tell us what we know already.

Waste of money
Allen Lakeman has of course made a much better suggestion.
The amount it would cost to install bus bays along the Spit Rd/Military Rd corridor is relatively small, yet the benefits would be great for transit lane users. Yet no money is spent on this. I suspect the bus drivers are against bus bays as they complain about traffic not letting them back into the lane. They are clearly not concerned about delaying buses behind them while they stop to pick up or set down passengers!

The RTA sign is an utter money waster. Scotch the idea and implement real solutions.

rta sign at seaforth
Monies should be spent of improving the traffic flow not putting up signs to tell us what we already know.

RTA sign
Mike, if you want my vote in the next election promise a complete management shakeup of the RTA and ensure that the RTA management is made up of people who have common sense and actually drive in traffic.

PEOPLE WITH PHD's in Traffic management need not apply.

Smoke and mirrors. Disgraceful. Fix the Spit-Neutral Bay congestion!

Seaforth sign
This is crazy - what are the RTA thinking of! What a waste of money, could be so better spent elsewhere.
Apart from the waste of money it will be an absolute eyesore in Seaforth and totally unneccessary. As you say we are all too well aware of the traffic problem, no other way to go to the City, please try and get the RTA to think again. Why has there been no community consultation? Also regarding the new roundabout at the junction of Bangaroo Street and Woodbine Street - again no community consultation, not sure if this is RTA or Warringah Council.
Thank you Mike and roll on the next state election - how can we bring it on sooner!
Best regards, Fiona

We all know what we face on the spit bridge day in and day out .
Why not resurface the massive pot holes on Military Raod, Sydney Road etc, etc on the Northern Beaches. Please advise who is the sign contractor another ALP supporter?

Seaforth RTA sign
I absolutely agree The RTA does need to demonstrate how this ugly sign will provide any benefit or advantage to motorists. Rather it feels as though it is rubbing the noses of motorists in the fact that there is no escape!

$400,000 to do what.....?
Nero was at least mad! But who in the RTA is actually responsible for fiddling whilst burning up our money on sensless PR excercises ?
Perhaps we need only look as far as the State Minister for transport, whoever that happens to currently be; maybe he too would find himself forgiven on grounds of insanity were he able to admit what is, after all, the obvious truth ....

Memo to RTA: Don't Tell Us About the Tr
Same thing applies to the insult to peak hour motorists travelling towards the city over the past week along Ourimbah Rd. The vile scum that decided to allow roadworks to reduce this road to one lane for over 1 week, and then place an electronic sign up , telling us all to use an alternate route, is a person I'd place on a level equal to the bastard that BP put in charge of oil rig maintenance. (maybe not quite to that degree...but you can hopefully catch my drift). While we're on the subject of this diabolical road and it's connections, please feel free to enlighten the RTA, that the traffic lights at the Spit Bridge are worse than ever ! Thank you.

Burnt Bridge Creek
Roads planning has reached an appalling state, remove the variable message sign on the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation, stop construction of the proposed roundabout at the intersection of Bangaroo and Snake Streets, remove Seaforth Fence and RTA signage at the intersection of Manly and Sydney Roads and prevent the installation of another piece of pointless public works, namely yet more pointless signage at Frenchs Forest Road. Truly, the Intelligent Traffic Systems Section of The Roads and Traffic Authority clearly shows no signs of it and needs to be relieved from public service.

Spit Bridge
....somehow the Spit Bridge has turned pedestrian across the spit instead of over it. Protest now - Call 131 700 !

Variable Message Signs
The money saved by not implementing the prposed VMS in Seaforth should be diverted to removing the VMS on the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation. A pointless piece of public works which is so flawed in it's own right. The RTA deserves to be brought to account for its disgard of the local community.
