No Ifs, No Buts - New Hospital Will Be Built
Monday, 15 December 2008

The NSW Labor Government is on notice that if it fails to deliver the new Northern Beaches Hospital, the next Liberal/Nationals Government will do so, Manly MP Mike Baird assured Manly residents today.

“If Labor has any integrity it should deliver on its 2006 promise to build our new hospital, however if it doesn’t – we will,” said Mike Baird, Member for Manly.

“The Mini Budget brought an axe down on projects across the State and although the Northern Beaches hospital was not one of them, we still don’t have any evidence from the Government it’s going to happen.

“Well today the Liberal/Nationals are giving that assurance – no ifs, no buts – construction on the new Northern Beaches hospital will begin within the first term of an O’Farrell-led Government,” Mr Baird said.

“Over the past two years all Peninsula residents have heard from NSW Labor is a string of empty promises on the new hospital and constant threats about downgrading services at Manly and Mona Vale.

“Only last month there were reports of plans to close the emergency department at Manly Hospital. There are 6,500 bed nights a year linked to the emergency department at Manly – if there is no new hospital, where will these patients go?”

Shadow Minister for Health Jillian Skinner said the Liberal/Nationals policy announcement would secure the medical and health-care of thousands of families in Sydney’s north that have been neglected by Labor for over a decade.

“Despite years of promises the State Labor Government has proven it is not interested in honouring a commitment to build a new Northern Beaches hospital – John Della Bosca shows no signs of reversing that position,” Mrs Skinner said.

Mr Baird said the local Liberal MPs were united in their commitment to deliver this important health facility.

Pittwater MP Rob Stokes said, “Local doctors have said patient care will suffer if the hospital isn’t built and we will not allow that to happen.”

“If Labor doesn’t build it – the Liberal/Nationals will,” said Wakehurst MP Brad Hazzard.

“Northern Beaches doctors and patients need a new hospital as soon as possible. We will deliver on that need,” said Davidson MP Jonathan O’Dea.

New Hospital
I'd like the Liberals/National to clarify if their commitment includes building on the Frenchs Forest site. I'd dearly like to see discussions expanded to include details about how you would manage the population growth on the peninsula in other areas - particularly just how our roads and public transport are going to cope with more and more people moving into the area.

Deborah's comments
Hi Deborah

Thanks for the comment. There are many elements to this plan, which I am happy to discuss face to face. Why don't you contact the office early in the new year and we can arrange a time to chat.

cheers
Mike

no Buts!
Considering the level of funding that the NSW Liberal Party take form British American Tobacco I am not sure if your heading is a pun or not?

Frenchs Forest (FF) hospital site
Well, given the abandonment of funding for Manly and Mona Vale, of course I hope the FF hospital will be built (comforting that the Libs are promising this - the Labor party's promise is evidently empty), as the land was reserved for this purpose over 40 years ago, before my family first moved to the area.

However, as a birder, I have a concern which I hope you can allay.

Patches of mature eucalypt forest aren't that common in that area - the Wakehurst Parkway to Seaforth has been burned out so often there aren't many remaining old eucalypts with the necessary hollows used by nesting parrots.
The "artist's impression" of the future hospital shows the buildings surrounded by mature trees, so you get the strong impression these will be retained. I know that however, in practice, builders find it more convenient to work with a blank slate and put shrubs in later.
Is there any commitment to build the hospital structures with the minimum of environmental impact, retaining as much undisturbed bush as possible?
Is there any plan to attach nesting boxes to retained trees near to those that will be removed? It would not be expensive, and I think it would give the site a head start to making it a more peaceful place for recuperating patients.
