Opening of New Salvos Centre - A Celebration of the Manly Community
Thursday, 22 July 2010

Homeless men and women will now have access to a warm shower and new kitchen at the Salvation Army’s refurbished centre on Pittwater Road thanks to the generous spirit of the local community, Manly MP Mike Baird said today.

“The opening of the new Salvation Army New Life Community Centre today shows what can be achieved when the whole community comes together,” Mr Baird said.

“Manly is a beautiful place to live but ultimately it is people’s efforts to support the most vulnerable that make our community.

“The work of the Salvation Army and the Rotary Club of Manly Sunrise, supported by generous donors and a State Government grant of $29,000, has made these new facilities possible today.

“It isn’t often that you’ll hear me give the State Government a tick but in terms of this grant, they get one.

“Captain Brett Mitchell from the Salvation Army and Ted Waters, Vivien Coulson and Robert Steffens from Sunrise Rotary should be incredibly proud of the new centre.

“The turnaround in this project was incredible, with Rotary volunteers doing a lot of the hands-on work.

“The contribution of local churches, individuals across the community and Manly Council in expediting approvals also deserves acknowledgment.

“Unfortunately there is enormous need for these facilities in Manly.

“The demand on this centre shows Manly is not immune to the housing crisis with an increasing number of individuals struggling to keep pace with the cost of living.

“There will be an enormous social benefit gained by the refurbishment of this centre and the community should be praised for making it a reality.”

The Salvation Army New Life Community Centre is at 59 Pittwater Road Manly

The Salvos.
Hello Mike,
Nice to hear from you.
I did in fact pop in your office 2 week's ago but you had gone away.
May I say that in the case of the Salvos, for once, it is so nice to keep away from politic & concentrate on the need of ours.
The Salvos do a great job & they do deserve a lot from us.
It is nice of you to remind us of the other side of our beauty of Manly & the N/beaches.
Keep up the good work,
Albert.

salvos soup kitchen
I am volunteer at the soup kitchen - thanks for your efforts in getting some of the funding for the recently opened new facility. It will be a great assistance in continuing to provide for the less fortunate in our area. I thought your words this morning were spot on ! and sorry did not get a chance to say so in person Good luck in your endeavours.
Regards

Salvos again.
Hello again Mike,

Back on to the Salvos & the good work that they do.
May I suggest that companies in our area as well as residents of companies living in our area do a push to raise $ 100,000 for the Salvos, between 24 July to end of August. This is only a small amount between us in business.
Your team or the Salvos team do the monitoring & publish the donations.
Also, you suggest the best way to donate, card - bank - cheque & the like.
If you & the Salvos feel that this can be done ( I tell you it can ) then I will start with the Austrapac Group with a $ 1,000 donation.
Come on all, get going. Only $ 99,000 to go !
Please push this as it is worth it.
Cheers,
Albert.

New Salvo Centre.
This is wonderful news Mike. Manly has suffered diminished low cost housing over the past 20 years, and we have a lot of people doing it tough.(many not due to their own fault!)
