Opportunity to Have Say on Seaforth Fence
Thursday, 17 September 2009

A public forum will now be held to allow community consultation on the RTA’s plans to install pedestrian fences in Seaforth, at the request of Manly MP Mike Baird and the local Precinct committee.

“The RTA was planning to start work installing the safety fence in Seaforth this weekend, however it was clear there had not been proper consultation with the community,” Mr Baird said.

“We have secured a public meeting with the RTA on Monday 28 September at 7pm at Balgowlah RSL so the Seaforth community can have their say.

“The pedestrian fence is a material change and it needs to be considered based on the facts,” Mr Baird said.

The RTA is proposing the pedestrian fence be installed:

  • On the median of Sydney Road between Hope Street and 25 metres east of Kempbridge Avenue.
  • On the median of Sydney Road between Kempbridge Avenue and Frenchs Forest Road.
  • On the southern kerb of Sydney Road between Kempbridge Avenue and the bus stop east of Kempbridge Avenue.

“The RTA believes the fence is necessary to improve pedestrian safety, with several pedestrian crashes in the past five years – two of which involved a fatality.

“That’s why this forum is necessary. The community needs to understand where the RTA is coming from in terms of danger posed to pedestrians.

“Local businesses and residents also deserve a say in how the fence is likely to impact the heart of Seaforth village.

“The RTA has given us an assurance that they will take the community’s feedback on board so I encourage people to attend the forum to give their input.”

Seaforth Fence.
This fence is not needed and will be a complete waste of public money. If the RTA has spare cash they need to continue the noise barrier down Burnt Creek Deviation.

RTA Fences In Seaforth Businesses
A "pedestrian fence" is not about pedestrians. It is about cars. Cars speeding through Seaforth village. The fence is a 'pedestrian apartheid'. The fence will divide Seaforth businesses and lessen their patronage. The fence even if it achieves its aim of channelling pedestrians to the light-controlled intersection WILL NOT assist the flow of traffic, as the RTA hopes. For every pedestrian who currently crosses safely to the wide median strip before waiting to cross to the other side, will in future channelled by the fence, go to the lights, press the 'walk button' and stop all traffic in both directions. Or does the RTA intend to make the pedestrians wait 5 or 10 minutes after pressing the button? Say 'No' to the fence on the median between Kempbridge and Hope streets. Say 'yes' to a 40km speed limit in Seaforth village.

Seaforth Pedestrian Safety
One might ask the RTA and Manly Council about Manly Road between Heaton Avenue and Avona Cres why they have ignored requests to have the pathe widened to take a pram or stroller. There is NO PEDESTRIAN ACCESS to Seaforth over Manly Road bewteen The Spit Bridge and the Ethyl St bridge and the Manly Road access path is as old as the bridge. The Councilis no better as they promised if the RTA would no do anything the Council would. It's a joke - typical political blame someone else. Guess what would happen if we refused to pay rates and used our rates to fix the problem - their would be an inquiry!!!!!

Seaforth Pedestrian Safety
Same old cheapie method trotted out as a "solution".
Make a pleasant streetscape and people will want to go there. Build walls (fences) and you're making it car-friendly at the expense of pedestrians.
This is definitely a win for cars only. They have NO RIGHT to reduce the amenity for pedestrians.
Fences are simply awful, and the RTA needs to be FORCED to find an alternative that reconciles a local shopping centre either side of a busy thoroughfare.

I can't be at the forum, but hope you can actually get someone from the RTA to attend who is more than a mouthpiece just there to fill a chair. They need to be made to act on the wishes of the people, not just go back to their masters with the message "Yes, we've now done the community consultation bit, now we can go ahead with what we originally planned".

Seaforth shops
You should also note that they have just installed a no u-turn sign at the eastern end of the shops before the lights.

This was necessary for residents in Seaforth. It enabled you to look for a park on both sides of the street or return to Seaforth having parked at the shops. Without the uturn bay Seaforth residents will need to go through the major intersection and return another way.

Is someone trying to send us to the Balgowlah Heights new shopping centre?Adrian

Seaforth fence.
Please let the RTA get on with its task of protecting the public.
We have too much interference with desirable public works in this country. No wonder things take so long to be completed.

Seaforth fence
Hi Mike,

I feel that this fence will only prompt pedestrians to cross the road before the fence, or against the red light at the gap between the fencing. I think ripple strips (heaven forbid, even a dreaded speed hump) or a cobble stoneing surfacing on the road may induce drivers to slow down and better cope with the common jay walker.

In saying this, I also feel that fences are a worthwhile addition to prevent pedestrians getting hit. And one example is the fence on Pittwater Rd. Brookvale shops.

Regards
Alex.

RTA
In recent times it would appear every time the Roads and Traffic Authority installs a new piece of infrastructure it creates a new traffic jam.

Please - remove fences in Seaforth village and restore amenity back to the community of Seaforth & Burnt Bridge Creek, also remove the ridiculous No U Tun signs in Seaforth village which now adds a K or 2 for simple journies to & from the local shops. How about legalising golf buggies in local zones for 5 bucks a year rego - solar powered ones for free !

One of the great beauties of Burnt Bridge Creek is that when the sun goes down the creek goes dark and night flora & fauna take over, a community amenity and natural beauty. Now only to be illuminated by a completely misplaced RTA Variable Message Sign. Save Burnt Bridge Creek from the RTA - I demand its removal and protest against such a self serving entity which seemingly so content with grinding the community's motorists to a halt whilst VMSing gem texts like "TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT PLAN NOT WORKING AHEAD - EXPECT DELAYS", "LOOK IN YOUR BLIND SPOT","YOU ARE BEING TARGETTED by (insert gov dept here)", "TOLL GOING UP ON FREEWAY". Whose idea was it anyway - to toll a freeway - makes a mockery of concepts like public roads and democracy doesn't it ?

Apologies for this outburst - keep up the good work Mike.

regards

The Roads and Traffic Authority of New S
Sunday evening around 9:30, the community of Burnt Bridge Creek, Balgowlah, Seaforth & Manly were busy getting kids off to sleep, - the RTA in it\'s wisdom fired up a Jackhammer, a Concrete grinder and dropped large boulders into an empty metal truck body through the night. I have lost count of the number of nights sleep lost now as a result of this uneccesary public work at a completly uneccesary time of night for an uneccesary maintenance bay for a completely misplaced and totally uneccesary Variable Message Sign on the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation. I demand the sign be immediately removed. I demand a copy of the community needs statement which justified this scandalous squander of public monies and I demand last night\'s operators of power tools be charged under noise abatement laws. I also demand compensation for the completely false and misleading information provided to myself and my neighbours by a Mr. Anh Nguyen, Project Manager, Intelligent Transport Systems Projects and a Ms. Elizabeth Sim, Senior Project Engineer, Sydney Road Services. I do not accept the pre, empty and hollow apologies offered by them or The Manager of Northern Roads. Their reckless and offensive actions are destroying the beauty and wonderful amentity of the Burnt Bridge Creek environs.

Quite clearly the problem is not The Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation, nor Manly Road, Sydney Road, Spit Road, Military Road or Falcon Street. Quite clearly the problem is Maquarie Street. Its despotic, crony choaked government deserves to be relieved from public service.

Thank you for your time with this complaint. Please pass on my thoughts to the Govenor General.
