Pledge to Retain Land for Public Education
Friday, 23 January 2009

Governments should not have the power to sell schools and TAFEs without approval from Parliament, said Manly MP Mike Baird who will move to change legislation in objection to the current sale of Seaforth TAFE.

“Public education should not be sold off at the whim of the Treasurer and we will be introducing a Private Members Bill to stop this from happening,” Mr Baird said.

“The NSW Labor Government has shown its disregard for public education by shutting down Seaforth TAFE in 1999 and allowing the site to lay idle for almost a decade.

“Now, as the Rees Government scrambles for cash to make up for their years of waste and mismanagement, the site will be sold and public education sacrificed.

“With kindergartens in the Manly area bursting at the seams, the demand for public education is only going to increase along with the pressure on existing facilities.

“I will be working with the Shadow Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli, to introduce a Bill into Parliament so that any plan to sell off schools or TAFEs is voted on before it is enacted.

“This will stop Governments or indeed Treasurers trying to balance Budgets at the expense of future public education.

“While the sale of Seaforth TAFE will deliver the Government a small boost to its bottom line, the needs of the Manly community and public education are sacrificed.

“Schools and TAFEs should not be sold without the proposal being subject to the full scrutiny of Parliament,” Mr Baird said.

The Rees Government announced its plans to sell the former Seaforth TAFE site in the November mini-budget.

This week the NSW Department of Planning issued a site compatibility certificate to allow a development application to be lodged with Manly Council.  Development on the site must fit within Manly Council guidelines and follow a process of community consultation.

“If we lose this fight, at least with Manly Council having the final say we won’t end up with an unwanted high rise in Seaforth.”

Please keep Seaforth Tafe as a much need
I studied at the Seaforth Tafe in 89-90. Please upgrade it and keep it going for the next generations.
Our family has been living in Seaforth for almost 3 years. All the local residents had the opportunity to cast their vote in regard to the future of Seaforth Tafe.
The voting results did show clearly that the majority wants to keep the site as an educational institution (my husband & I count ourselves on those statistics).
If the results of the locals were not going to be taken into consideration _ why was an election done in the first place?
What’s the purpose to go ahead with a huge waist of ratepayers’ money & time to perform such a voting exercise, if the “expert decision-makers” were not willing to listen to the opinion of the locals anyway?
We, the local residents will be the ones living with the consequences of any greedy decision by the \"experts\" manipulating our future amenities.
All the locals are well aware already that throughout the year, the \"bottle-neck\" of the Seaforth roundabout is an authentic nightmare to negotiate every morning. Then if the Tafe site is transformed into a development of high-rises, where will all the extra traffic go? It will be a concrete-jungle with many bad tempers surrounding it!
Human beings in general are given all the requisites to plan and think ahead before taking unnecessary and expensive actions. Why governments don’t follow those simple principles too?

Everyone knows that the Northern Beaches desperately needs more educational venues.
1. It will encourage locals to develop their horizons and their skills closer to home;
2. In consequence it will cut-down the amount of traffic passing-through the other local nightmare called \"Spit-bridge\";
3. The government (and many of us) is well aware that there are shortages of many trades;
4. Keeping young people busy, knowledgeable and skilled is a plus in the future of any economy;
5. In consequence there will be more people with less time to waist in activities such as binge-drinking, burn-outs, break-ins, vandalism, violence and all their many repercussions in society (all of them are a huge disruption to many families and a waist of taxpayers funds) ;
The Northern Beaches, for a \"well-off\" area socially and economically speaking has some bad and shameful statistics in regard to: drink-driving, binge-drinking and related violence.
Maybe there is a co-relation in regard to the lack of local educational institutions available in such a broad area from the southern suburbs of Seaforth/Balgowlah all the way to the northern suburbs of Palm Beach/Avalon.
As we usually say: \"If you want something well done, ask busy people!\"

Sale of Public Land
The flogging off of Seaforth TAFE for private development, is just more evidence of a NSW Planning Department with vested interests which lie entirely with developers interests, and NOT that of the public. Surely this constitutes systemic corruption of the democratic process. If not, there should be some legislation that prevents public land from being sold, it should be quarantined for the public. Once our land is gone it is almost impossible to retrieve. Public land should stay in public hands to be used for the many public purposes that the community requires - sports fields, cultural and recreation centres, green open spaces, public parks, gardens, cycle tracks, schools, hospitals, and many more.

Seaforth Tafe sale, education sacrificed
You definately are a man of his word Mike and and one we need to lead us. You are on the right page for education and knowing it needs to be re-written are fighting for our dying system, thank you Mike! Is there any way we can save this site for the Tafe or has the boat surely sailed on this one?

education
no surprise here! This Govt is selling everything it can off to cover years of mis-management. Not only schools but the public hospital system has lost lives and put many other patients at risk.

Seaforth TAFE.
Thank you Mike, for the Info.
What about a Trust for the site, where the current site / space would be retained as Strata Title, within a new project and therefore keep the Seaforth TAFE for many years to come.
Any comments ?
Albert.
