Put Public Hospitals Above Politics

Tues 10 Feb - Shadow Treasurer and Member for Manly, Mike Baird, has written to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd pleading for Federal Government funding for the long-awaited hospital on the Northern Beaches.

“I have written to the Prime Minister, asking him to put politics aside and support the funding submission for the Frenchs Forest Hospital.

“I understand the NSW Government has put the project forward as part of the Federal Government’s major infrastructure programme.

“To support the request, I have asked him to visit Manly and Mona Vale Hospitals to see for himself, how these facilities have been downgraded leaving patients and staff in appalling conditions.

“At the weekend I was advised that a patient had their stitches melt under the heat in the absence of air-conditioning.

“It is time to put the interests of the community ahead of politics and commit the funding for this much needed health facility.

“My plea for assistance follows concerns raised by senior health professionals last week, that they believe the State Government is pulling back from a commitment to the hospital.  It was significant to note that there was no funding allocation for the project in the mini-budget.

“I fear that without the intervention of the Federal Government, this project will continue to be delayed.

“The NSW Coalition is committed to building the hospital if elected in 2011, but the community shouldn’t have to wait another two years for work to commence,” said Mr Baird.
