Youth to Decide How to Stop Binge Drinking - Funding Secured for Summit
Monday, 03 August 2009

Young people on the Northern Beaches will have their say on how to reduce binge drinking after Manly MP Mike Baird secured a grant from the NSW Government for a Summit on the issue.

Youth Minister Graham West visited Manly yesterday to award Manly Youth Council $5,000 to hold a two-day conference on binge drinking called Youth Decide later this year.

“I’m excited that young people on the Northern Beaches will have a forum where they can decide the best approach in combating binge drinking,” said Mr Baird.

“By no means is binge drinking a problem solely for youth – it is a culture widespread throughout the community.

“However, the youth perspective is essential if we are going to make a real reduction in the high levels of binge drinking leading to injury, assault and crime across the Peninsula.”

High school students and members of youth groups across the Northern Beaches will be invited to Youth Decide and participants will develop campaigns to prevent and attack the problem of binge drinking.

“At the Summit, young people will form working groups to think of a health promotion idea to combat binge drinking that they could run within their own school or peer group.

“Each working party will be given $500 to go back to their school or youth group and, with the support of a supervisor, will work on implementing the project over four months.”

As former Shadow Youth Minister, Mr Baird said he is aware that youth often feel marginalised and not listened to on issues that affect them.

“The Youth Decide Summit is a chance for youth to tell us what they think the solutions should be,” Mr Baird said.

“This will be a unique opportunity for young people to take leadership in developing prevention and awareness-raising campaigns to help their peers avoid binge drinking.”

The event will be organised by youth workers at Manly, Warringah and Pittwater Councils; Northern Beaches Health Promotion; and Manly Drug Education & Counselling Centre.

“I know the people involved will hold a first-class event that may well have significant long-term benefits for the kids involved and the community at large,” Mr Baird said.

Binge Drinking
Great idea. Its about time we ask the kids instead of 50 year olds making a dumb decision that again will not work. Good work.

Binge Drinking.
Hello Mike,

It is a great move for the young to show what they want & can do.
Free to talk between them & propose some action.
I for a fact, (62) could write a book on the problem. I will in fact send you a separate e-mail.
What we have to look at is the cost of drinking, so much is done againt tobacco (good) but so little against alcool ?
Why? an expert told me last year that alcool is classified as food ! We may have to open our eyes ?
Let's look at the damages of alcool versus tobacco ?
Nice to see some action.
Cheers,
A.

Fantastic
I think this is fantastic. It's exactly how to talk to youth and get them involved and owning it. What date is it? Love to be there as a fly on the wall or to help out in any way I can. As a parent of a toddler and future youth around Manly I'm keen to get Manly clean and safe for my family. I'm in - where do I sign up?

Binge Drinking
Great news, as a mother of 2 boys on the Northern Beaches, and working in the drug and alcohol arena, its a start. Well done, lets hear from our future, the youth of today. Not all are binge drinkers, it will make for a much safer Northern Beaches roll on summer.

Binge drinking
Excellent idea regarding the summit to discuss binge drinking. It's a shame the local Liberal Mayor Jean Hay has publicly endorsed the DA to increase the size of Hugo's Bar at Manly Wharf at much the same time you are pursuing this encouraging initiative.

alcohol and related issues
My son Robin Ward is now in the Pheonix Unit Manly Hospital. He started drinking with the boys when young. He is now learning how to deal with this issue . It has become a crutch for his emotional issues which you know about

Binge Drinking........
Giving the youth some responsibility to voice their ideas on the problem is a terrific idea, after all they are amongst it more than you and i, therefore should have more of an idea how to deal with it. Good move Mike...... Debra.
