Build and Retain Campaign
Saturday, 15 May 2010

On 1 April 2006 the Manly Daily carried the headline, “It’s good news for all”. The NSW Government was going to build a new level 5 Hospital for the Northern Beaches and Frenchs Forest was the site.

Four years later it’s hard not to think this was just an April Fools stunt. Tall trees and thick shrubs stand on the corner of Warringah Road and the Wakehurst Parkway where the wards and beds were supposed to lie. Staff at both Manly and Mona Vale Hospitals are downtrodden with disappointment and patients have stopped hoping.

So as another NSW Budget is about to be handed down, we are drawing a line in the sand to say – enough is enough.

This has moved beyond politics – for many in the community it is now personal. They have watched as the constant cutbacks at Manly and Mona Vale have demoralised staff and they have watched as the stretched resources have compromised the care they or their relatives have received. And they are now angry.

We have already committed to build the Northern Beaches Hospital if the community elects us next year. The Liberals and Nationals have only made a handful of capital commitments considering the Budget constraints and the Northern Beaches Hospital is one of them.

However, until that time we are putting out a call for arms to get the new hospital built. We’re looking for community members to lead the charge in the Build and Retain Campaign (BARC) – a shout out to build the Northern Beaches Hospital and retain current health services at Manly and Mona Vale.

We want funds allocated in the Budget to start the new hospital and we want the haemorrhaging of services at Manly and Mona Vale to stop.

This week I met Lyn Hopper, the Manly Branch President of the NSW Nurses Association, on the steps of Parliament. She presented me with a petition against the latest cutback – the closure of the Aged Care and Rehabilitation Unit next week resulting in a loss of 20 beds and 22 full-time staff from Manly Hospital.

The petition contained approximately 600 signatures, collected in less than a week, to demonstrate to the Health Minister that the community wants their aged care unit saved.

Lyn had dashed over to Parliament in her lunch break in a cab that her colleagues had chipped in for; buoyed by the feeling their voices would be heard. Despite the constant disappointment, Lyn and her fellow staff are not giving up the fight. The fact that they have to fight just to stop losing services is a disgrace.

I know the community is cynical that the new hospital will ever be built. All I can say is if we are elected we will be held accountable to our commitment, and until that time we will hold the current government to account.

You can help get our community the health services we need. To be part of BARC, the Build and Retain Campaign, simply send an email to the Health Minister at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with a copy to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and share your thoughts on our health services.

If you want a more active role in this campaign, call my office on 9976 2773 and sign up. I am determined to get this new hospital built, as is Shadow Health Minister Jillian Skinner and Northern Beaches MPs, the Member for Wakehurst Brad Hazzard and the Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes. Let's fight to build the new hospital and fight to retain the health services we deserve.

Cheers

Mike

New Warringah Hospital
It seems the people of the Northern Beaches are just ignored. My daughter is a midwife at Manly Hospital and although she is a calm individual, she has told me of the loss of morale that is happening amongst the nursing staff due to the conditions in Manly and Mona Vale Hospitals.
I certainly hope that something will be done soon about the French's Forest Hospital although everyone is fast losing hope.

Hospital.
Hello Mike,

Many thanks for your message regarding the Northern Region hospitals.
While the service at Manly & Mona Vale is now at such a low level, it could not go much further down ?
Therefore it may be wise to ensure that the present gov. does not start any new project.
They could only make a mess of it. I am sure that once you are back in power, you will give your priority. No much longer to go !
Keep well,
A.

Health services
Many hospital desperately needs upgrading. I thought the minister promised better health services and more beds in hospitals. Instead the government is removing beds and cutting back life saving equipment necessary for the well being of patents in a modern hospital. Our government is almost criminal in the way they waste our taxes on useless self-serving endeavours.
We need a government who works on behalf of the people who support it. Upgrade our Northern Beaches hospitals. Manly hospital needs more beds not less. Our health system is a shambles compared to what is could and should be.
yours sincerely

Mrs Taylor.

your blog, hospital
Dear Mike.
I really do not know all that much about hospitals to make comments that may be of some value. Please allow me just to say that I wish very much if polititians would refrain from making noise about things such as the hospital in question, the Metro, the high speed train to Canberra, the warming of the planet and a whole string of other items that are promised and then for one reason or another are defered, delayed, shelved or simply forgotten. All these announcements by themselves would do not all that much harm, but they all cost money and usually plenty of it..
To my mind, little, if anything, should be publicised until the government in charge is sure that the finance and all the other underlaying issues have been considered and ascertained to such a degree that ant given project can get off the gound without becoming a political football together with the usual pointing of the finger.
Looking at the malaise of the hospitals, there is the Manly Hospital in urgent need of attention. The some applies to the Mona Vale hospital. Then we want to build a new hospital. My question is: can we afford all this or would it not be better to get the existing hospitals in order before we talk about a new one? I do not know. The only thing I do know is that politicians are losing respect in the community by making statements and promises and then having to turn around and break their promises. It speaks of poor planning and poor government.. And I for one do not like to see people belittled who serve either in government or in opposition.

Kind regards

Wolfgang Trittler.

Hospital or the Election
Frankly, it would be better to reserve your energy for the election - remove the Government and you will have your hospital. So, lets see Mike and the lib team out in marginal and not so marginal seats and even full labour seats in the west and north whipping up some interest in your new plans. If this election does not see a change of government then it may never happen.

Mona Vale Hospital
HI Mike, Thanks for your support re. both Manly & Mona Vale Hospitals. I am a volunteer in Emergency at the latter and am in the throes of a community fund hoping to raise some $20,000 to have a carport type structure erected over the the two closest short term parking bays and footpath, immediately outside the doors to Emergency Dept.,so that perople arriving in private cars or taxis can stay dry when arriving/departing, as well as keeping our staff dry.
Plans have ben accepted by the Hospital adminstration, and we will shortly be announcing our drive for donors to assist us, as well as running a raffle.
I fully support the ongoing involvement of both hospitals in the community, and will continue to do so (if I am still alive) on the completion of any hospital that might be built at Frenchs Forest.
Thank you for taking up the call to arms,
Regards, Mike Kewley. - Hospital Valunteer. Narrabeen.
