Anyone who has read the papers for the past couple of weeks would be forgiven for thinking that the only show in town involves a pub named after a lizard which is beginning to take increased bookings for Christmas functions on the back of the fame!! I understand the fascination with the issue as anyone in this game has to deal with the high level of public scrutiny but, it is hard not to feel sorry for Della who I understand from many is supposed to be a decent bloke. Still it was his actions, no one else's, involved on and after that night...

The important point of this is what a distraction it is to the Iemma Government. It is not as if there are a dearth of issues to deal with but, this week we have staff, press officers and the full focus of a Premiers office dealing with a "birthday drinks" incident. However, I want to give you some hope for while this has been going on Barry O'Farrell has been steadily securing some big wins on the issues that matter such as our future energy supply.

In quite an incredible achievement the NSW Opposition was able to bring to Parliament a Bill that ensures the Auditor-General will now provide a review of the entire electricity sale process. Whatever your view on this transaction, there is undoubted community support for an "independent perspective" that will allow us all to consider whether this transaction is in the interests of the state. Without Barry this wouldn't have happened pure and simple....

On the electricity debate I have stated previously in this space that the economic rationale is clear for private sector involvement but, our position remains "not at any cost or at any time". There has been some criticism of this in the media but I challenge any CEO to tell me that they would pursue a transaction at any time or at any cost. I know that many of you will be glazing at this point however if you want the full details then read the full speech I gave to parliament yesterday. If I dare say so it is a cracker and well worth a late night read!!

Cheers
Mike

electricity sale
I do not favour the sale. It is an asset that by its nature needs strong controls. In private hands this wil become irrelevant in favour of profits for the shareholders/owners - lessening priorities such as satisfactroy service provsiom and maintenance. Lessens have to be learnt from other States (or countries like the UK - trains). John
