| If the NSW Government was a company - would you invest in it? |

In any decision to invest, wise investors look at three things – the quality of the management of the company you are investing in, their track record, and the underlying numbers. I also believe it’s the right way to judge a government on its economic performance. What are the values, culture and philosophy of the team? What is their record of implementation? And how reliable are the assumptions that underpin the forecasts? The importance of these questions is that a Budget is only as strong as the team that will implement it. I’m sure investment analysts would be very suspicious of any company that have had four CEOs in five years and over 200 changes in its senior management team in the same period. Yet this is the management turnover of the NSW Government. I suspect those analysts would also be suspicious of investing in companies that consistently failed in its partnerships with other organisations. The lesson of the Cross City Tunnel and the Metro is that the current NSW Government is not a reliable partner. And then we have to look at the performance of an organisation against its own projections. In 2009, Treasurer Roozendaal committed the NSW Government to keeping the growth in expense costs to 7.6%, yet in this past year the growth was 9.6%. This repeats a trend seen over the past few years and this overrun alone will cost taxpayers close to $1 billion. This performance makes the expense forecasts over the coming four years even more fanciful where it is projected to be 3.4%. If they fail to meet their expense targets any forecast surpluses are nothing more than a mirage. My view is that economic management is more than having a positive number at the end of the balance sheet. Given the dramatic turnaround in the property market and significant stimulus funds from the Federal Government, it was easy to keep the Budget in surplus. What’s missing from this Budget is exactly what’s missing from this Government – and it’s the word leadership. Where is the plan to make NSW number one again? Where is the substantive work to encourage businesses to invest in NSW, to expand private sector investment in infrastructure, to improve performance across every area of government? The fact is we don’t see such a plan from this Government. This is despite the fact that in 2000, 35% of all private sector spending in Australia occurred in NSW. By last year it had fallen to 24%. These figures hold true even if one excludes the resources boom states of Western Australia and Queensland. Excluding these two states, New South Wales’ share of private investment spending among remaining states fell from almost 50% to 42% over the same period. Where is the leadership to move forward much needed road and transport projects in Sydney and move beyond the glossy brochures produced, changed and reproduced every 18 months? And where is the leadership to help our regional centres, with their lower cost structures, become vibrant economic alternatives to simply investing in Sydney’s CBD? After almost 16 years, the unstable team that governs NSW has run out of puff and given up. They even lack the passion and motivation for the seat of Penrith that they have held for 34 out of the past 37 years. They have given up getting things done, they are simply counting down the clock. By every measure used by wise investors this government has failed – the management team is unstable and self serving, its record in delivery continues to deteriorate and the balance sheet is nowhere near as strong as it should be. NSW needs a new management team - it’s as simple as that.

Cool, so wheres your plan to make things better? NSW Budget Where did they get the money from to balance the budget? Perhaps some of the "fraud monies" from the BER ? I would have liked to see some reduction in public service numbers, this is what happens when private companies are in deficit, overheads must be reduced. budget/elections mike tell us your policies please. If government is cash strapped, where do you propose to raise funds? Will your management team sack 30 000 public servants as your leader admits to? Are you selling off the Sydney ferries.? They are an iconic part of Sydney. Let us hear it Mike I am sick of an opposition without policies. I thankyou for your information. NSW Budget 2010 I consider that the reductions in those what I call stupid taxes viz stamp duty and payroll Tax are good,It is sensible in the Stamp duty ,to encourage to the over 65s to downsize.Additionally, the stamp duty concessions to encourage the house building industry. However, the most important thing for the state is the failure of successive governments to provide sufficient public transport in Sydney.Where is the starting of the SW and NW rail extensions, the dial Richmond line, the "missing links" for the F4 and F3 and a provision for tunnel to the northern beaches(even if it was a toll road. There could be a partial provision start to all of these I realize though that one can not have it all,but taking away some of the above benefits the public would see thel ight to the transport grid lock --- which we now live in. leadership/ budget Mike I agree with you. NSW needs leadership and it lacks it in Barry O'Farrell who will lose the unlosable election. Time to step up Mike and replace Barry before it's too late. best Steve A vision I agree GC less finger pointing and more planing would be much more useful. Luckily Governments are not businesses, that would really kill investment regardless of the government. NSW Budget I am extremely concerned that the budget reduces funding to government schools and TAFE whilst increasing funding to private schools, some of which are extremely wealthy and have substantial private property holdings on which they do not pay council rates! NSW Budget....... Mike I saw you on my computer yesterday and I agree 100% that what the election promises are just a ploy to win voters. On the other hand I agree with one of your people commenting that Barry O` Farrell doesn`t instill much faith in me, you should replace him and take us to the polls. Mike you are the man for the job, I have said this from day one, what comes out of your mouth is not contrived lies but constructive views that we all can understand. We need this 12 year run to end now, it has been too long we have been waiting for a change. Cheers Debra. premier has no class How dare the premier make improper inuendos about the Liberal member. Her comment today also challenged our diggers who bravely fought our war and walked the unforgiving Kokoda. Kennelly is a disgrace and her thoughtless comments belong in a kindergarden classroom, not just for the intelligent populous, and I object to my taxes paying her salary. The Budget It is very clear that the Northern Beaches are beingm forgotten. What if anything is being disgussed with Mr O'Farrell to surport the sicgracfulm state of Manly & Mona Vale Hospital?? Mr O'Farrell has noit mentioned anything or for, that mattern does't seem to say much at all!! How are we going to suceed when he clearly lets a lot of very important issues fall into\\\\on a deaf ear!!!This is a very big opurtunity for your party to win this election once again & we need to here from you all clearily explaining your policies!!!! If you don't do somthing positive this time We in this houshold with most difinatley be changing our votting preferences!!!!! reply to D Astley Even though the new Northern Beaches hospital has been just a hollow promise from the Govt since 2006, we have announced that if elected, work will start on the new hospital in the first term! The Libs/Nats are also committed to stopping the loss of services at Manly and Mona Vale - you may wish to join our Build and Retain Campaign to add your voice to this push. Search BARC in the search facility on this website for more details. Cheers Lisa |
