Do you support a 2am cease serving of alcohol in Manly venues?

Sat 21 March

I have to premise my comments today by saying that I am a tragic sports lover so my view is biased before we start. That said there is something very symbolic about the announcements of two events that are coming to Australia through NSW and Victoria this year.

In the NSW corner we have Nathan Rees announcement of Brian Eno as the principal behind another Sydney Festival called Vivid something or other. Now I am not disputing his involvement with some of the worlds great music acts, but  what does it all mean? The theme seems to be lights and music but unless I am mistaken that was the strategy for date nights when we were 17 not a cornerstone of establishing NSW as a place to be! I am just not sure that pictures of Brian Eno flicking light switches around the city will win over Times Square or the villages of Florence.

In the southern corner we have Victoria (the undisputed events champ) who in one foul swoop has brought (apparently for the same money) the greatest athlete the planet has ever seen. This is the guy who wins US Opens on one leg, chips in to win the US Masters with the greatest shot in history and has more google hits than solutions to the global financial crisis. Every parent who takes their kids to see Tiger swing the club will recount the stories to the grand-kids in the years to come. I know that sport brings its distortions on what is really important but, no-one will be able to dispute that this guy is "happening" now and his achievements will do so for generations to come.

At the crux is my belief that NSW has settled for second best for far too long. The three recent events we have brought to Sydney are the Powerboats, Edinburgh Tattoo and now Brian Eno. Is it just me or does this list feel like watching re-runs of I Dream of Jeanie is a better option? Now if we had Tiger in town we could make something of it ... What about a tourism shot of Tiger trying to hit a golf ball the length of the Sydney Harbour Bridge or a nine iron from the international terminal across to the Sydney Opera House? We could concurrently run fireworks, a Sydney Festival and incentives to every major corporate in the world to have an annual conference in Sydney .

My sense is we have forgotten to dream big in this city and I for one believe it is time that we did! I wish Brian Eno well in his time in the greatest city on earth but I hope it doesn't clash with the Tiger being called on TV by Sandy Roberts. So Nathan a couple of thoughts for you - if you got U2 and Coldplay to perform in Hyde Park for free then imagine the scene that concert would create across the world as the sun set on the glistening harbour and Joshua Tree boomed out. While you were at it ... what about the scene of having formula one cars roar across the Harbour Bridge as a billion people watched on TV - now that is thinking big!

Use Some Imagination Premier Reese......
I am ashamed to admit it Mike but i like I Dream of Jeanie, seriously what do you expect from the Reese Government. They can`t get anything to do with the economic crises right, why should this be any different. I think we should get the Tiger here and have him hit them right over the Opera House; now that`s entertainment! Cheers Mike, Debra.

Brian Eno is HUGE!!!
Hi Mike,

I have to disagree! Melbourne has led the way for far too long in the field of arts and culture. Having Brian Eno curate the Sydney Festival in 2010 is finally going to place Sydney on the world map, as far as art and music goes. And it will be a lot more memorable than watching some American (albeit a talented one) hit a little white ball around a golf course!

Better even, than watching a couple of hotted up cars race across the Harbour Bridge for a couple of seconds.

What Brian Eno does for the city of Sydney will be a lot more than just flicking a couple of light switches. This man is a visionary, a creative genius, who for 3 weeks will paint our city skyline with light like you’ve never seen before. Much BIGGER and BETTER than what our city officials did for the 2000 Olympics. And much better than any blue light disco you ever took a date to!

I know many Melbournians are green with envy that Sydney has snagged Brian Eno for our Festival. They know the importance of his work, and they know the lasting impact it will have on our city. Unfortunately, Sydney people just don’t know it. Yet. This might explain why Melbourne has always been ahead of Sydney as far as arts and cultural entertainment.

For those who don’t know, Brian Eno did for the music revolution in the 70’s and 80’s what Beatles producer George Martin did for the rock n roll revolution during the 60’s. He is a producer, a visionary, a music theorist, he is the sound behind some of the best popular music in history, including Brian Ferry & Roxy Music, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Devo, just to name a few. Oh, and he is the masterful genius behind the production on six U2 albums... including JOSHUA TREE.

I for one can’t wait to see what this man does to our city landscape. And I’m sure the eyes of the world’s most influential creative artists will be firmly fixed on Sydney to see what magical brilliance he weaves.

Regards
Amanda

Brian Eno
Mike, You are showing how out of touch with the world you are by claiming you do not understand the work of Brian Eno. There is a lot the the present state government could improve on. However, having Brian Eno perform at the Sydney Opera House is important culturally as he is the inventor of ambient music. By the way, who is Tiger?

NSW Corners?
Dear Mike, I'm not particuarly thrilled with the prospects of the visits of either of the gentlement mentioned in your blog. Sydney has plenty going for it. Excluding our Harbour, Australians benefit from the City and its surroundings - The Blue Mountains, South and North Coasts and the Hunter. To the general populace they come free. Furthermore, we're spared the annoyances of the boisterous and expensive hype that accompany the likes of Eno or Tiger. Could not the financial outlay to bring these people and their entorurage to our shores be more wisely directed to improved access to the benefits already listed here? Maybe these are what ought occupy the intnetions of our State Leaders as 'events' to corner'? Thanks. John

Thinking Big
Apart from Therese Rein, the ALP generally doesn't have any entrepreneurial or business background. They only know how to organisational ability they have is from the unions.

re: Thinking big
Thanks for this blog, Mike. I admire your desire to think big but I feel that it skews somewhat from Barry O'Farrell's recent comments about the wisdom of investing in upgrading the Opera House when he feels the funds could be better spent on hospital beds, police funding etc. By that logic, Sydney should neither be funding Brian Eno *or* Tiger Woods. I'd like to be a little clearer as to Liberal policy on what is worthy "frippery" (money for arts, culture public entertainment and so on) and what is not.

John, Manly.
(Liberal Voter)

p.s. The phrase is "one fell swoop", not "one foul swoop".

Big thinking
Clearly Mike has a vision and like Kennet did for Victoria, we need desperately a visionary, and one can do Maths!, also a bigger bloody font here could be a start! Also good to see mike at the bushfire relief on Sunday he moverd us all with his story of the 12 yo girl who has lost it all, but has the love and support of this community, Mike keep it up
