Does anyone else have that sense of 'here we go again' as revelations of cost blow outs hit the Iron Cove widening project? I know that we are dealing with history but, the Iemma Government just doesn't appear to have the capacity to manage competently nor to look beyond the current electoral cycle. Why would any State Government have the courage or vision to make any decisions unless there was a payback within their four year term ...?? How about this for a thought ...because it is the right thing to do.
The Spit Bridge project was a sham more because it was a mask of any real effort to solve the chronic congestion that has hit the entire corridor, rather than just a project managed about as competently as Societe Generales security systems. By pretending to be doing something the debate centred on its merits not the need for a holistic solution. Whether it be peak oil, climate change, or just a morning peak that sits still ... an improvement is required in public transport and any dollars must first and foremost be put into this.
Everyone on the northern beaches understands the need to take time to deliver solutions but, when we are played for fools like we were on the widening project then this strikes at the heart of the integrity of this State Government. My job is to get on with consulting experts on how we fix the mess of the Spit corridor but, one thing I will do is focus on the long term needs of our community and not look for cheap political opportunism. I also have a message for Balmain and Drummoyne ... be afraid be very afraid.
