Some days are just special and the 13th February 2008 is a day that will rightly be etched as a proud part of our nation's history. I cannot help but feel a deep sense of pride that our federal parliament today confronted openly the horror of the stolen generation and rightly apologised for its role (indeed in a sense all of our roles) in this blight on our history.
I congratulate Kevin Rudd for driving the vision, Brendan Nelson in leading a united endorsement and all MPs for standing as one. I cannot pretend to understand the pain of those directly impacted but, like the many huddled in the rain in front of Manly Council this morning we were united in one thing - that is that this response today would begin a healing process that is so much overdue.
I was once told that "words can ruin a moment" so today I just say - I too like my federal colleagues am sorry and remain committed to continuing the healing process in whatever capacity I can. In saying sorry today it is one small step for our federal parliament and one giant step for our nation.
Cheers
Mike
