Member for Manly Mike Baird has nominated Manly grandmother June Kilmister for the 2008 Woman of the Year Award in recognition of her 40 years of service to the community. “June is 80 years old but every morning she walks the length of Manly beach – rain hail or shine she’s out there smiling at people and cheering up their day,” said Mr Baird. “Last Friday June held her annual end-of-year breakfast by the beach, bringing together around 80 people who love walking Manly beach as part of their daily routine. “June has been part of the Manly Meals on Wheels service for 40 years and is their longest-serving volunteer. She helps her neighbours and greets strangers. “June feels she’s done her bit if she makes one person happy each day. I think that’s a wonderful attitude to have and I’m pleased June can be recognised for the simple way she unites the Manly community.” Mr Baird said the NSW Woman of the Year Award aims to recognise women who have contributed to the growth of more vibrant and robust communities across NSW. The Premier will announce the winner on International Women’s Day on 6 March 2008. “The Awards highlight the role women play in leading and inspiring our communities. June embodies real community spirit and I wish her the best of luck in the Awards,” he said.MEDIA: Lisa Harrington - 0406 726 880
