Bus Transit System Could Solve Peninsula Traffic Woes

A bus transit system could be the answer to solving congestion on the Northern Beaches, according to an international transport expert asked to assess the area by Manly MP Mike Baird.

“It’s critically important that we improve public transport so it is a viable alternative to the car, which it is simply not at the moment for Northern Beaches residents,” said Mr Baird.

“We have been considering many options for solving Spit congestion and relying on the guidance of experts, and it seems a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is a potentially feasible way of unclogging roads on the Peninsula.”

Mr Frits Olyslagers, Director of Transtech Engineering, believes a BRT system from Newport to the city could reduce the journey time by 40% and convert 15-20% of car users to public transport.

“This would mean 9,000 fewer cars every morning on the Spit and a 45 minute journey time to the city on the bus from Newport.”

Mr Baird said the proposition is that a dedicated bus lane would allow buses to run every two minutes and carry 7.5 times the number of people in a car lane.

“It is high capacity similar to a rail system, however as it takes advantage of existing road infrastructure it is less than 5% of the cost. It moves a lot quicker than a standard bus lane because the system is synchronised by a control centre,” Mr Baird said.

“We’re also very conscious of trying to make it easier for people who want to travel by bicycle. Current bike lanes are not adequate. The BRT system would need to integrate with cycleways and capacity for bike racks at the bus stops would be essential.”

Mr Baird said he would ask Transport Minister John Watkins and Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal to undertake a feasibility study for a BRT system on the Northern Beaches. He said similar systems are proving to be effective in easing traffic congestion in France, Brazil and Bangkok.

“Obviously community concerns along the corridor mean it is a challenge but, lets see if the experts say it can be done.

“People are so much more conscious now of saving water and turning off their lights, now we need an efficient public transport system to coax us out of our cars.”

The problem with moving around the city of Sydney extedns far further than the spit bridge. Travelling from Harbord to Milsons point now takes 2 hours that correct 2 hors and approximately 1 hour. That is a day and a half travelling time each week. there is only one express bus those living in harbord can catch to go to the city or north sydney and this is only available in peak hour. Commuters can spend upto 30 minutes waiting for a connecting bus at neurtral bay. Most buses that go past are full. So this special bus system you wish to conduct an enquiry into will not solve this issue. You need to realise that as more people catch public transport you need to put on more bus services and not just for the residents of manly. You need to examine the situation more thoroughly . I challenge you to commute from harbord to north sydney for a week.

I kind of agree with Jane but really do feel that there will be no solution which will suit everyones individual needs. I believe a system similar to Singapores MRT is a great way to go but assume no govt will want to spend the money. Idea is to have transport hubs on the main points on the nthn beaches, ie mall, dee why, narrabeen etc for a mrt style train station and then a bus interchange at each hub which distibutes smaller buses to the inner areas of the penisula. The trains stop at these hubs all the way to the city where the network can integrate with other trains. 
Problem with any govt in Aus is there is no future planning which will pay dividends 10 to 20 years, no one with any vision and courage as far as I am concerned. All we end up with is plans that would have got by 25 years ago. Any one out there agree?

i agree that the transport to North Sydney/Milsons Point is oftern overlooked. I drive as i have no other option that is nearly as quick. Even the E50 to Manly is often full if i attempt to catch it from Nth Syd, adding 30 mins to the trip. 
 
Getting to Chatswood is also a total joke and it shouldnt involve crossing the spit bridge as the 144 does.
