Commuters Urged to Rescue Buses from Government Cuts
Friday, 08 August 2008

Peninsula commuters are urged to write to the Transport Minister to protest against the State Transit Authority's proposed cuts to services, said Member for Manly Mike Baird.

“We need to generate some people power. The STA says they are tinkering with the timetable but the facts are the proposed changes are far more significant and we need people to speak out during this consultation process,” Mr Baird said.

Mr Baird said he met this week with the regional General Manager of the STA to express the community’s disappointment in the proposed changes.

“The good news is that although it looks like the discontinuation of the E72 and E73 will leave Seaforth residents without an express service to the city, this isn’t the case.

“The map the STA mailed to households did not clearly show the E69 will run from Narraweena to the city, via Allambie Heights and Seaforth, in place of the E72 and E73.

“I made it clear to the General Manager that the community will absolutely not accept a reduction in services. He assured me that every Seaforth express bus user would still have an express bus in the E69. I have also asked for a trial of the 141 Balgowlah bus that was discontinued a few years ago.

“Unfortunately there is more bad news that wasn’t obvious in the brochure. The STA is planning to add six more stops to the E71 from Manly and E68 from North Balgowlah to the city – this is unbelievable.

“The simple message is: there should be fewer stops on express services, not more. What is the point in adding more stops along Military Road when journey times are getting even longer for commuters?

“The STA has said they will reconsider the changes if there is enough opposition. We urge commuters to write to the Transport Minister before 29 August. I will also be making a formal submission so please copy me in and I will reinforce your comments.

“It is mindboggling that the Iemma Government is reducing bus services at a time when petrol prices are skyrocketing, traffic is at a standstill and people are conscious of the need to get out of their cars to reduce pollution. Now is our chance to say enough is enough.”

Transport issues - E 73
Dear SIr,

The problem is for the people residing in Beacon Hill. They have no connections between Cromer or Narraweena or may be even City, which would be very hard for all of us.

Kindly look into this matter at your earliest.

Thanking you

Best regards,

Iemma Government - Next Election
Dear Mike,
I hope you are maintaining a list of the Iemma Government bad management policies, so you can remind the people before they vote next time.

Cromer Heights to North Sydney, direct n
According to Sydney Buses, everyone on the Northern Beaches works in the city and shops at the Mall! Too bad if you're not one of them.
I wonder if the decision makers have ever tried transferring to North Sydney at Watson Street in the morning or at Neutral Bay at night to come back to Cromer Heights. The queues, the number of full buses going past and bad mannered school kids is enough to make you drive.
Anyway, looks like my one direct bus home will be replaced by three transfers. What joy!

E72 & E73
The E72 & E73 picks up "commuters' from Cromer, Narraweena, Beacon Hill, Frenchs Forest and Seaforth via the Parkway. By the time the bus gets to Seaforth its often standing room only. WHY AXE SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN WORKING WELL FOR MANY YEARS! Dont be fooled by the suggested alternative, We NEED more services not less. If the details are NOT in the document ynow you wont have a leg to stand on when the plan is implemented. SPEAK UP NOW! WE NEED THE E72 & E73.

E68
The proposal to replace the E68 buses with an all stop 168 is not logical any any way.

Currently the morning trips and "standing room" only before the bus even reaches Seaforth.

It appears that the changes are designed to discourage people for using public transport

Beacon Hill Resident Re: E72 / E73
As a Beacon Hill resident I was disappointed to find out about the proposal to axe the E72 & E73 as I depend on this service to get to work. Being on Warringah Road I would need to drive to another bus stop that will add another 30 mins onto my current 1 hr journey. At a time when reducing cars on the road, congestion on Spit Bridge and Interest Rates I find this proposal ridiculous. Having used the bus for 7 years and being full every day I urge everyone to speak up and look at ways to improve transport.
