Domestic Violence Rising in Manly - Funds Needed to Help
Thursday, 01 May 2008

The Manly Community Centre is seeing an increase in cases of domestic violence as housing stress and family breakdown become more prevalent on the Peninsula, said Manly MP Mike Baird who is hosting a fundraiser next month to support victims.

“It is easy to think life is good in Manly, however there are many families who are struggling to make ends meet and it is tragic this is resulting in domestic violence,” said Mr Baird.

The Community Centre’s Manager, Jacquiline Smith, said in the past 18 months they have seen a steady increase in women seeking help for domestic violence.

“It would be naïve to think the rising cost of living is not playing a part. Women are leaving their homes because of domestic violence and many can’t afford to stay in Manly so the kids have to be uprooted from schools and from their support network,” Ms Smith said.

“We are also seeing more evidence of violence in couples because of alcohol abuse. In one morning before Christmas, our domestic violence worker received five calls for help in an hour.”

There were 67 incidents of domestic violence reported in the Manly area in 2004 and 79 last year, according to figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.

Mr Baird said the Centre’s domestic violence program has been running as a pilot for the past 12 months, however it will not continue without an injection of funds.

“The support the Manly Community Centre provides is critical. Their anger management groups for men are already making a difference and there is a plan to start support groups for women but they need more resources.

“We are hoping the Manly community will show its spirit and come together for the inaugural Manly Community Fundraising Dinner on Friday 16 May,” Mr Baird said.

“The event will be held at the International College of Management and will also raise funds for our local surf life saving clubs, which are another integral part of our community.

“It is an opportunity for people who are better off to reach out to those who are struggling. To book a ticket or a table of 10, email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or call Kristie on 9976 2773.”
