| Future of Seaforth Village In Community's Hands |

Tuesday 6 November 2007 Manly MP Mike Baird has endorsed Manly Council’s decision to conduct a plebiscite so local residents have the final say on the redevelopment of Seaforth Village. “After the State Government closed Seaforth TAFE in 1999, the community has endured many years of debate over how the site should be redeveloped,” said Mr Baird. “I endorse Manly Council’s decision last night to conduct a referendum, as local residents deserve the final say. Obviously the redevelopment of this site will have a big impact on the whole community for the next 30 years.” Manly Council’s plan to conduct a plebiscite was reached after the Community Reference Group voted in favour of Landcom’s proposal, known as ‘option three’. “The Community Reference Group has obviously identified benefits in Landcom’s proposal, but clearly the loss of public education is a downside. If the majority do vote for option three, I will be pushing for the community space in the site to be used as a library. “I will also be insisting the State Government spend the proceeds from the sale of the site, which is expected to be around $8 million, on our local schools. “There are many schools in the area that are crying out for funds. Manly Vale public school has been seeking to replace its demountable administration building for more than 12 years. “The classrooms at Seaforth public school haven’t been painted for 14 years; Balgowlah North public school needs a new administration block and car park; and Curl Curl public school can’t go ahead with its infrastructure plans despite much population growth in the area. “There are many in the community who would like the site retained for education and the recent federal announcement of technical colleges or indeed reconsidering for an enhanced TAFE, are all alternative options to be considered.” Mr Baird said if the community voted for the site to be retained as an education facility, he would push for this if elected into Government.
