Iemma Fails To Ease NSW Business Tax Burden

Thursday 14 June 2007

MEDIA RELEASE

Shadow Minister for Finance Mike Baird today condemned Premier Morris Iemma’s refusal to ease the payroll tax burden hitting the NSW business community.

“Morris Iemma should be encouraging growth and investment in NSW rather than shackling business with one of the highest payroll tax rates in Australia.” Mr Baird said.

“Successive Labor Governments have made NSW the second highest overall taxing state in Australia and yet Morris Iemma’s comments today show he continues to ignores business.

“Clearly the Premier is happy that NSW continues to leak investment to other states as business packs up and looks for a friendlier climate.”

Mr Baird said a possible government surplus of $2 billion left no more room for excuses.

““If the budget is in surplus there is an obligation on the Labor Government to ease the tax restraints on the people of NSW.

“On one hand we have Morris Iemma failing to reduce taxes while on the other hand he continually wastes $600 million annually on inefficiencies in government Shared Services.

“For all the spin we hear about greater government efficiencies we have yet to be given a timeline for a supposed review into shared services which continues to bleed taxpayers money in the interim.

“This is a government which for over a year has blamed the Federal Government while it fails to prioritise a long-promised payroll tax cut from the current rate of 6 per cent.

“If we provide a business friendly economy we encourage investment which drives jobs and prosperity. It’s a simple economic lesson Morris Iemma has failed to learn.”
