Iemma Owes Us $59 Million Day Of Action

Thursday 14 June 2007

MEDIA RELEASE

Manly MP Mike Baird together with NSW Liberal Barry O'Farrell and fellow Liberal Northern Beaches and North Shore MPs joined local residents today in a protest demanding the Iemma Government spend the $59 million allocated to the Spit Bridge widening on local public transport.

The Iemma Owes Us $59 million Day Of Action involved a six kilometre walk, run or ride from Seaforth across The Spit Bridge then along Spit and Military Rds to Neutral Bay.

“Successive Labor Governments have done nothing to address the deteriorating transport problems experienced by Northern Beaches residents and false promises like the Spit Bridge widening are an example of their appalling record on infrastructure,” Manly MP Mike Baird said.

“Now that the widening is scrapped the Labor Government will only say a working group will be established to look at options for the Spit/Military Rd corridor. But today the message is clear; Northern Beaches residents are sick of the token approach and sick of being treated like second-class citizens.

“This is the community’s $59 million, it’s been promised for years and it must be immediately spent on public transport infrastructure including a Brookvale Bus depot Park and Ride with regular express buses to the city.”

Mr Baird said next week’s State Budget gave the Iemma Government the perfect opportunity to put its money where its mouth was.

“The Iemma Government has a clear moral obligation to not only ensure money is not wasted on a talk fest but to ensure funds are invested in attaining real transport solutions,” he said.

“The Iemma Government should take the lead of the NSW Liberal/Nationals and create a detailed Northern Beaches public transport plan with a focus on public transport.”
