Labor Continues 12 Years Of Neglect

Wednesday 19 June 2007

MEDIA RELEASE

Manly MP Mike Baird said today’s budget was just the latest snub for local residents who continue to be ignored by the Labor Government's unwillingness to fund services or infrastructure in Manly.

“This was billed as an infrastructure and services budget yet Morris Iemma simply follows the sad pattern of the Labor Government since 1995 by ignoring the needs of Manly residents,” Mr Baird said.

“It continues Labor’s pattern of contempt and arrogance and there is no clearer example then the government’s omission from this budget of $59 million it was obligated to spend on northern beaches public transport.

“The government had the opportunity to improve public transport on the northern beaches by spending money it had already allocated to the area yet now we see the funds have been swept off elsewhere, a pattern all too familiar to Manly residents.”

Other key areas ignored by the government include:

  • Frenchs Forest Hospital: No funds for construction or timeline
  • Manly Hospital: No commitment to services including maternity before new hospital built
  • Ferries: No vessel replacement strategy for Freshwater Class ferries
  • Buses: No park and ride infrastructure, recycling of announcements
  • Mental Health: No new funding for Manly Hospital’s East Wing

“Outside of long overdue safety initiatives we have funding for a couple of licks of paint for Manly Ferries and a recycling of previous announcements on new buses,” Mr Baird said.

“The government will not commit funding for construction of the new northern beaches hospital nor will it commit to a timeline.

“It says it is investing in mental health but one of the leading centres for mental health care in Sydney Manly hospital’s East Wing receives zero dollars in additional funding.”
