The NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher visited Bear Cottage yesterday on the invitation of Member for Manly Mike Baird who said it is impossible not to be touched by the magic of the place.
“I wanted the Minister to see the wonder of Bear Cottage so she could consider what her government could do to provide support,” Mr Baird said.
“Bear Cottage is the State’s only children’s hospice, however it receives no government funding.
“It is a magical place. Not only does it provide a haven for children around the State who have terminal illnesses, it also offers priceless time-out for their families.
“There’s no doubt the Minister was moved. She had a full tour of the facility and met the children staying there, their families and the incredible staff.
“I really appreciate her making the time to come to Manly and see first hand the amazing work Bear Cottage does.
“Although Bear Cottage is connected to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, it relies completely on community donations to cover the $1.7 million it costs to run each year.
“It is my hope that the Health Minister agreeing to visit Bear Cottage demonstrates that the State Government is interested in providing much-needed funds.
“At the moment they have no surety from year to year that they will be able to continue to provide a lifeline to families.
“I give full credit to the Minister for agreeing to come with me to see that Bear Cottage is worthy of government funds. Bear Cottage is above politics.
“They are under funding pressure and yesterday’s visit was a positive step in alleviating that pressure.”
