Manly's Challenge To Reduce Our Footprint

Thursday 30 August 2007

Manly residents would be disappointed to know our suburb is one of the worst in Sydney for contributing to greenhouse pollution, said Member for Manly Mike Baird who has today called on the community to reduce its waste.

“I know most Manly residents have a great appreciation for the environment so it was a surprise to learn we are the 10th worst Sydney suburb for greenhouse gas emissions and the 15th worst in water consumption.

“Our eco-footprint, which is a measure of the land we need to fulfil our lifestyle, is a whopping 7.38 hectares per person per year. This is significantly higher than the state average of 6.33 hectares.”

The findings come from the Australian Conservation Foundation’s new Consumption Atlas, which is an interactive online tool that allows Australians to view the greenhouse pollution created by households in their suburb.

The Australian Conservation Foundation found that wealthy households have a greater environmental impact because they typically buy more things and travel by air more often.

Inner Sydney and North Sydney are the state’s biggest greenhouse polluters, followed by Woollahra, South Sydney and Mosman.

“The more you buy the more you contribute to climate change so the message is buy selectively, waste less and choose products that last,” said Mr Baird.

Mr Baird encouraged residents to log on to the Australian Conservation Foundation website to get practical tips on how to reduce greenhouse pollution.

“I hope Manly will unite to reduce our impact on the environment. Let’s make sure that when the next survey is done, we are one of the leading Sydney suburbs in reducing our eco-footprint.

“Things you can do today include driving the car less, buying fewer goods, putting food scraps in a compost and using a water-efficient shower head.”
