| Manly's Ferry Heritage in Danger of Being Lost |
|
Wed 27 May - The historic MV Baragoola is at risk of being sold for scrap metal, with the NSW Heritage Council considering removing its preservation order, said Member for Manly, Mike Baird. “It is essential as a community, we retain our heritage and the MV Baragoola is an important part of Manly’s history. “I urge people to make a submission to the NSW Planning Department on the proposed removal of the preservation order on the old ferry. “Once the ferry is removed from the State Heritage Register, then anything can happen to it, including being sold for scrap metal. “I requested the NSW Heritage Council extend the deadline for submissions from June 1, following concerns from local residents that the two week time frame which had been set, was too short to allow sufficient community input on the decision. “I welcome the Council’s willingness to extend that deadline until June 21.” The MV Baragoola was built at Balmain in 1923 and serviced Manly ferry commuters until 1983. A Permanent Conservation Order was placed on the ferry in 1989. Despite some work on trying to restore the vessel, it has significantly deteriorated to the point where the Council is now questioning whether, even if restored, it will qualify for heritage listing as so much of the original vessel will need to be replaced. “Our ferry heritage is part of the character of Manly and should be preserved,” Mr Baird said. “This is another example of mismanagement from the State Government which fails to care or respect the things which are important to our communities. “It appears under this Government, preservation orders are worthless. Action should have been taken years ago to ensure the MV Baragoola was kept in good condition, rather being allowed to rust away,” Mr Baird said. Media Contact: Wendy Black 0418 532 534
