Manly MP Mike Baird has ramped up a campaign to see Manly and Freshwater recognised as a National Surfing Reserve, arguing it is far more deserving than Cronulla, which was awarded the title on Sunday.
“To see Cronulla declared a National Surfing Reserve before Manly is quite frankly a joke! I like Cronulla but saying that Cronulla is more significant in surfing terms than Manly is ridiculous,” Mr Baird said.
“Manly and Freshwater are the birthplace of surfing in Australia. Whether it is Isabel Letham as the first female surfer, Midget Farrelly winning the first world title or the Duke’s famous first wave, this area is synonymous with surfing.
“I have been gathering support for Manly and Freshwater’s claim to the title and not surprisingly people are really behind it. Unfortunately Cronulla has pipped us to the post!”
Mr Baird said the aim of a surfing reserve is to formally recognise the area for its quality surf and long and close links with surfers, and to preserve the site for future surfers.
“Declaring Manly and Freshwater a National Surfing Reserve would recognise the cultural and historical significance of surfing to this area.
“There was a degree of cynicism when Peter Garrett declared Maroubra a National Surfing Reserve during his campaign for the federal seat in 2006. Since then, Lennox and Crescent Head have joined the list in NSW, and now Cronulla.
“I welcome anyone who has an interest in surfing to get in touch if they want to join in the campaign to see Manly and Freshwater declared a National Surfing Reserve.
“We will be establishing a formal committee to lead the campaign. Layne Beachley and Ryan Alagich have already indicated their support so I will ask them to join the committee together with community representatives.
“It is really important we can demonstrate widespread community support for the title. The campaign needs to be driven by locals who are passionate about maintaining surfing in this area for future generations.”
Mr Baird said if the campaign were successful, Manly and Freshwater would be listed as a National Surfing Reserve under the Crown Lands Act.
