Manly Won't Be Swayed By Booze Bullies

Friday 10 August 2007

Local licensees should forge ahead in their efforts to encourage responsible drinking in Manly and not be intimidated by alcohol companies, said Member for Manly Mike Baird.

“The members of the Manly Liquor Accord know their patrons best and if there’s a drink that is facilitating rapid intoxication then why not take a stand?” said Mr Baird.

“I applaud the Steyne Hotel for banning the Jager bomb and the message for any drinks company wanting to push profit over social responsibilities is simply, butt out.

“Clearly the Jager bomb isn’t the only problem and I have encouraged the Accord to look at all similar drinks.”

In June Mr Baird hosted a meeting of the Manly Liquor Accord where it was agreed that a Code of Practice would be adopted to address antisocial behaviour.

The Code is set to include a crackdown on half-price drinks, restrictions on double-shots of spirits and limits on how many drinks each person can order at a time.

Mr Baird said countering the perception that Manly is unsafe is a personal priority and he is determined not to see local licensees be swayed by the commercial interests of alcohol manufacturers.

“Over the past five years we’ve seen a real influx of young families into Manly and residents who are passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle.

“There is a real opportunity for local venues to lead the way in catering to this market so I hope they’re not discouraged by manufacturers who are more concerned about their profits,” Mr Baird said.
