North Curl Curl Tower Compromise

Friday 27 July 2007

Telstra will contribute to the cost of new lighting at North Curl Curl’s John Fisher Park under a proposed plan to install new telecommunications equipment away from homes in the area, Manly MP Mike Baird said today.

The plan would see Telstra install its equipment on new lighting poles which would provide ample light to John Fisher Park playing fields and ensure the phone equipment was kept away from homes in the area.

This is despite Telstra having all approvals to place their tower within 15 metres of residential homes as of last week.

“I met with the residents of North Curl Curl who have voiced their concern about the location of the tower over the past two years. I am pleased we now have a potential compromise and I encourage the community to continue to have their say.

“The plan will require a development application and any resident concerns can be considered during this process,” Mr Baird said.

“Warringah Council has long had a plan to upgrade the lighting at this sporting facility so this new proposal would also help many local sporting groups.”

Curl Curl Youth Club President Damian Parkes said he would welcome the upgrade of lights for the soccer fields, which would make the fields safer for all players.

“We have been looking for an upgrade of the lights at the fields for many years but all appeals have fallen on deaf ears,” Mr Parkes said.

“If Telstra would come to the party it would please many, many people, especially the hundreds of kids who use the fields regularly.”
