Opportunity to Recognise Manly's Shining Volunteers
Wednesday, 24 September 2008

Manly MP Mike Baird is encouraging residents to shine the light on inspiring volunteers in the community by nominating them for the NSW Volunteer of the Year Award.

“One of the joys of this role is to see first hand the incredible ways so many people give back to the community,” Mr Baird said.

“The NSW Volunteer of the Year Award is an opportunity to say thank you to the many people who inspire us through their voluntary work.

“Nominations are only open until the end of the month so if you know of someone in the Manly area who deserves recognition, please call my office on 9976 2773."

Mr Baird said as well as a State winner, a winner will be chosen from each of the 16 regions across NSW including the Sydney Northern Region.

“The Awards will be presented at the NSW Parliament House on International Volunteer Day on 5 December, so it will be a wonderful way to give our local volunteers state-wide recognition.

“I am very proud to be nominating Toni Lynch of North Manly for the contribution she has made through more than 30 years volunteering at the Dalwood Family Care Centre at Seaforth.

“As President of the Dalwood Auxiliary, Toni has raised funds to help pay for a clinical psychologist and speech therapist, renovate the old preschool, equip the new building with furniture and subsidise the costs of children travelling from the country.

“Toni is a wonderful example of a volunteer who feels they gain more than they give and she is an inspiration,” Mr Baird said.

Toni said, “We all get tremendous satisfaction out of our fundraising, the dedicated therapists, teachers and staff can change the children’s outlook for the future from hopeless to very hopeful.

“I would certainly encourage anyone to be a volunteer, having a purpose in life at any age is essential and the wonderful friends you make is an added bonus,” Toni said.

Each year in NSW 1.7 million volunteers give more than 235 million work hours, contributing $5 billion to the State’s economy.
