Penguins Not Police - Forum Against North Head Development
Thursday, 12 June 2008

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has proposed a $21 million redevelopment of the Australian Institute of Police Management (AIPM) at Spring Cove on North Head, which is home to the endangered colony of Little Penguins, long-nosed bandicoots and other precious flora and fauna.

Their plan for a three-storey Las Vegas style complex on one of the most environmentally sensitive and historically important sites in the country is both inappropriate and unnecessary. The AFP is currently operating from the former School of Artillery and that is where they should stay.

The development plans are currently waiting for approval by the NSW Department of Planning. State Member for Manly Mike Baird and Federal Member for Warringah Tony Abbott have voiced the community's objections to this development in both Parliaments.

Here is your opportunity to help put a stop to this development.

The penguins could teach humans how to behave, they don't need the Federal Police for their peaceful existence.
At the Artillery School at least they can call the shots without disturbing anyone.

It's amazing that even an iconic area such as the entry to Sydney Harbour is not immune to such government shortsightedness. It makes us look like a third world country where we place the environment last, not because we need to, but because we don't care.

This is a unique habitat for these penguins. After the fuss over the Qyuarantine Station we do not want an overdevelopment. The recent attempt by "The N.S.W. Planning Minister" to gain more "Power over the People." is of grave concern.

Another environmentally destructive deve
This is just another development that will ruin another unique environment and animal habitat. I hope Mr Sartor listens to the community on this one unlike others.

A school can go anywhere - penguins can
The penguins can't move - admittedly some might argue that they are being stubborn and just won't. But they ask very little space of us while we continue to try and occupy all that there is. A school can go anywhere, just move it.

Whose nest is being feathered
This proposal flies in the face of Government policy at a time when the Rudd Labor Government is seeking cost efficiency dividends and is imposing cost saving measures across the entire spectrum of Government administration. The AIPM is an unincorporated association and its expansion on the Sydney Harbour foreshore is an extravagant waste of public funds which involves serious negative impacts on a unique and sensitive area of environmental and historic significance.
The proposal to spend in excess of $20million of public funds and damage this environmentally sensitive and historically significant area to provide accommodation and an unregulated entertainment area with harbour views for a small number of senior law enforcement officers is an indulgence that the broader community cannot accept.
