Quarry Reserve Win

Thurs 3 April - Member for Manly, Mike Baird, is calling on the NSW Government to do the right thing and hand over the land adjacent to Quarry Reserve in North Manly, to the community.

“I appreciate that common sense has prevailed with the Lands Minister, Tony Kelly, reluctantly agreeing to put the sale of the land in Amourin Street on hold.”

Expressions of Interest for the sale were due to close on Monday 6 April.

“On behalf of the local community, I had written to the Minister and raised the matter in Parliament, urging the Government to re-think this sale.

“It is welcome news that Lands Minister Tony Kelly has now reluctantly agreed to put the sale on hold pending the positive identification of a threatened species of flora.

“Well done to the community who fought for their open space.

“What we saw happening with this land in Amourin Street, was a quick grab for cash by a Government which hasn’t been able to manage its finances.

“However I remain concerned that Minister Kelly still believes the sale is in the ‘public interest’ and is pushing for the Council to purchase it at market value.(1)

“We must keep the pressure on the Minister to ensure the temporary halt to the sale, is not reversed.”

“I now call on the Minister to do the right thing and accept Warringah Council’s offer to manage the site as part of the larger Quarry Reserve.

“This is an ideal compromise as Warringah Council has offered to cover the costs of maintaining the land at no expense to the State Government.

“We have a responsibility to our children to protect our natural environment, particularly in our suburbs, as once it is developed, it is gone for ever,” Mr Baird said.

Thumbs up.
Of course, they'll try again later. Geez it's a struggle for the tiniest bit of parkland.

Quarry Reserve.....
Mike i agree with you all the way on this one, if Warringah Council has offered to manage the site and foot the bill for doing so, with no expense to the State Government wot`s their issue then. To make more money and put it to bad use; that`s their issue. With no regard for the communities opinion or the environmental impact it would cause to sell this site for development. We are not allowed to cut down certain native trees under any circumstance so why should the State Government be allowed to sell off and ruin an area with native animals living there and possible native flora, also our most precious natives ( OUR CHILDREN ) , in protecting this natural site for their future to enjoy!

Quarry Reserve
Dear Mike,

Thanks for your support on this issue. It is great news that the Govt. has decided to put things on hold.
This key discovery was one of many reasons why this land should remain as a Public Reserve.
While the Govt failed to complete an envirnomental assessment prior to the proposed sale they have also failed to do a Community Value Assessment.
What other parts of the state are they secretly selling off?

Regards
Michael Harrold
