Senior Drivers Asked for Views on Licensing Laws
Wednesday, 19 September 2007

Member for Manly Mike Baird is hosting a forum to give senior drivers the opportunity to have their say on the Government’s proposed changes to licensing laws.

“I’ve had many senior residents contact me because they’re anxious they would not be able to drive to doctor’s appointments, or bowls games, or to visit their family across the bridge,” said Mr Baird.

“I want to ensure senior drivers can voice their opinion before any laws are passed, so I’m holding a forum at 10:30am on Monday 24 September at the Manly Seniors Centre.”

The Iemma Government’s plan, outlined in a discussion paper by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), includes starting annual medical tests at 75 instead of 80.

It also includes a proposal to introduce an automatic radius restriction of 10 kilometres once drivers turn 85.

“This seems very harsh and would effectively mean that any senior citizen from Manly is no longer able to drive to the city,” said Mr Baird.

Les Dunbar from the Manly Senior Citizens Club is 80 years of age and opposed to the proposed changes.

“I just drove 800 kilometres to Queensland and back so I’m not very happy with the idea of only being able to drive within 10 kilometres of my house,” said Mr Dunbar.

Mr Baird said drivers over 85 could still get an unrestricted licence, but they would have to sit a driving test every year.

Mr Baird encouraged older drivers to attend the forum on Monday 24 September to give their feedback.

“I will be listening to the views of our senior residents and then making a submission to the RTA on behalf of the community to ensure Manly’s voice is heard. If you are unable to attend on the day, please drop a letter in to my office before 18 October and we will include it in the submission.”
