Spit Potholes To Go But Traffic Remains
Tuesday, 08 January 2008

Spit motorists can look forward to some relief when Manly Road is resurfaced next week after Manly MP Mike Baird pressured the State Government to fix the potholes.

“The ongoing traffic congestion is obviously the main problem for motorists travelling over the Spit Bridge but it doesn’t help when the road is a mess of potholes,” Mr Baird said.

“Although the State Government hasn’t come up with any solution to ease Spit congestion, at least they’ve responded to our calls to fix the potholes.”

Mr Baird said the Roads and Traffic Authority confirmed work would begin next Monday to resurface Manly Road from the Spit Bridge to Sydney Road.

“This could not come soon enough. Many residents have complained to me about the poor quality of the road leading down to the Spit Bridge.

“It is particularly dangerous for motorbike riders and cyclists who have to dodge the holes or risk falling off and getting seriously hurt.”

Mr Baird said the State Government’s Spit Bridge working group has not produced any recommendations since it was formed in May.

“They missed their own deadline of reporting recommendations to Government by the end of 2007.

“At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we are not holding our breath for the Labor Government to deliver any real solution to the Spit Bridge bottleneck.

“The State Coalition is working on its own plan to ease congestion on the Spit corridor and we will be releasing it this year.

“I am interested in all views on solutions for the Spit Bridge, particularly those incorporating more use of public transport, and I encourage residents to get in touch.”

The Government’s Spit Bridge working group consists of the RTA, State Transit, the Ministry of Transport and the Premier’s Infrastructure Implementation Group.
