Spit Widening Costs Known to Government Before Election - ICAC Called to Investigate
Wednesday, 25 June 2008

The Iemma Government knew the cost to widen the Spit Bridge far exceeded its estimates one month before the State Election and yet it did not announce this to the public until one month after it was re-elected, said Manly MP Mike Baird who has referred the matter to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

“In May last year the Minister for Roads told Northern Beaches residents the Iemma Government would not fulfil its election promise to widen the Spit Bridge as ‘the costs for this project now just don’t stack up’*,” Mr Baird said.

“We now know – thanks to documents obtained under Freedom of Information laws – that the Iemma Government knew in February the project costs were ‘markedly higher than the RTA’s estimate’**, yet it chose to hide this news from the voting public until it was safely back in power.

“In light of this information, I have written to the Commissioner of ICAC to request an investigation on the basis of corrupt conduct,” Mr Baird said.

“It is easy to become desensitised to the constant incompetence of the NSW Government, however this is serious. It is a case of electoral fraud.

“For many years Northern Beaches commuters have had to suffer years of grand promises on the Spit but no action.

“This week we have seen motorists stranded for up to three hours due to a mechanical fault preventing the Bridge from closing.

“The issue has now moved beyond a joke into pure, white rage. The Iemma Government has got away with hollow announcements for too long – people are crying out for real action to fix problems rather than media headlines.

“We are not holding our breath for the Government to deliver on a Spit solution. Their working group has not come up with one recommendation in more than a year. We will be delivering our own plan, centred around public transport, this year,” Mr Baird said.

Come on Mike nows your time to really run with this and keep pressing and pressing. Radio and papers are talking about it now!Do not let it run its course as what seems to happen after a week when the media moves on to something else and nothing is acheived. The ICAC call by you is a good one however Where is your solution? This has also taking a very long time to be released. Metro line the only real long term non road reliant solution.

Mrs
Good on you Mike for really spelling out the anger of the Northern Beaches motorists. This is notthing but a disgrace. I feel that a tunnel would be the solution and this could be starting at the upward drive on the Burnt Street Deviation, and tunnelled beneath the harbour and meeting up with the expressway. A toll on this road would be well patronised as the time saved would by far outway the costs. The spit bridge could still be as an alternative. Just a thought. Keep up the good work.

Spit Bridge
This bottleneck should be repaced and its planning should start now.
In the meantime there should be a curtailing of the bridges opening times. At certain openings it has been for one yacht--many vehicles
are stopped for one yacht--this is not fair.

Spit bridge-the people of the Northern b
The spit bridge must be fixed now, the people of the Northern Beachers deserve better! I agree with “sean” - we need a metro line from Dee Why to the city and/or Chatswood,. I think that we also need a tunnel to the freeway, a review of the spit bridge opening times and a ICAC investigation. Mr Iemma, Mr Roozendall and the RTA all need to come clean on the matter. It’s defiantly election fraud not to say that the spit bridge widening project wouldn’t happen until the election was over.

Spit Bridge
Keep the pressure up Mike. Both the government and the RTA need to be roasted and there are serious questions about the competence of both, given the wider issues outside our community.
As for Morris Dilemma, his response to the latest Spit Bridge fiasco, which was to ask the RTA to look at possibly reducing the bridge opening times, is plainly contemptible and demonstrates he is clueless about the seriousness of the issue and the impact it has on the people he is meant to govern.
His apology is as empty as his government and the RTA are of ideas and the will to act for the betterment of the community.

The Spit Bridge Solution
Mike, oh how one major foul-up changes the complexion on all the possible alternative solutions.
Where is the secret consortium with their solution?
Do we need another over-priced bottom of the harbour tunnel?
The solution is to widen the Spit Bridge to 6 lanes [plans ready to go] and have an underground busway from Parriwi Road to Falcon Street. The buses would be packed,
PS. Don\'t open the Bridge in peak hour.

solution
I agree with Sean and Dennis ... we need a solution and I am hopeful that we will release our findings in the next few months. when released we will start a community consultation programme ... experts plus community endorsement will mean that we have a "total solution" to fight for ... thanks for everyones comments ... Cheers
