Unemployment Grows by 17,500 in NSW
Thursday, 06 November 2008

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures show unemployment is on the rise in NSW with an extra 17,500 people added to the unemployed list last month alone, Shadow Treasurer Greg Pearce and Shadow Finance Minister Mike Baird said today.

“Treasurer Roozendaal cannot blame the national economic crisis for these figures with four other states and territories showing improved unemployment rates in the past month,” Mr Pearce said.

“Since January this year, NSW's unemployment rate has risen from 4.5% to 5.2% - well above the national average,” he said.

“Every state needs a long term plan to survive short term economic shocks and NSW is the worst prepared for this crisis,” Mike Baird said.

“Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan talks about national unemployment going over 5% next year as the full brunt of the financial crisis hits our shores – well NSW is already there and it looks like 6% is the more likely outcome for our state.

“Under this State Labor Government, NSW is no longer the first place to do business, that is why 75% of all jobs created last year were outside NSW,” he said.

“The rate of unemployment in NSW is increasing faster than other states as a direct consequence of the failures of the State Labor Government to encourage investment and provide tax relief to businesses who employ local residents,” Mr Baird said.

NSW High Unemployment
Hi Mike and Greg

Along with the high cost to business in the form of business and land taxes, confidence is in my view also falling in this state because of govt mismanagement.

Whilst taxing business so highly, the govt itself is not setting a leadership example with its top heavy bureaucracy and suspended employees list still on the payroll. These employees are costing the state $millions whilst contributing nothing.

Govt solution is to tax business and consumers to make up the shortfall.

Infrastructure such as transport has suffered so people have difficulty getting to their place of employment unless they live on its doorstep.

Hospitals are understaffed and underfunded, so that when someone has need of their services to get back to good health and the workforce, the services are either tardy or non existent.

Then given the new crisis of the world economy, one cannot blame business for throwing up its hands in despair and tightening its belt -- or relocating to somewhere else where conditions are more favourable.

All in all -- a huge vote of no confidence in this govt!

Yours sincerely

Think outside the square
Remember Labor's idea in 1976 to cut fares by 20%? That won Labor the 1976 election with a 1 seat majority.

Our State Government really needs to think outside the square. What about a cut in Land Tax to encourage investors back into the market to provide more houses and units for rent?

What about privatising the Sydney Ferries or at least the Jetcat service? Rather than cancelling the service.

If this incumbent Government increases or establishes new taxes next week with a mini budget the entrepreneurial spirit of NSW will be crushed for years.

Cheers

Richard
