| Youth Give Their Advice to Manly MP |
|
Thursday 9 August 2007 Four local students will join key members from across the community to offer their advice on tackling local issues in a new advisory group formed by Member for Manly Mike Baird. New captains of Mackellar Girls High, Jessie Gors and Brittany Gallagher, and Balgowlah Boys students, Peter Stephens and Josh Risbey, were chosen to represent the youth perspective. “I’ve approached the students and five residents across the fields of business, sports, health, the environment and community service, to get a wide range of perspectives. It’s not a political group it’s about putting the concerns of the community first. “We’ll meet every couple of months so I can get their insights into the issues that need attention and the priorities. I’m also eager to hear what they think Manly needs to make it an even better place to live,” Mr Baird said. Councillor and environmental scientist Judy Lambert has been appointed for the environment, swimmer Elka Graham for sport, Humphreys Newsagency owner John Humphreys for business, Manly midwife Pam Rawling for health and Manager of Manly Community Centre Jacqui Smith for community service. Mackellar Captain Jessie Gors said she was thrilled to give her input into decisions to improve Manly. “I have lived in the Manly area for 15 years and am highly aware of what people in the area want, especially the youth. I also work at a local tennis centre so I’ve been able to see the huge need for more and upgraded sporting facilities,” Jessie said. Mr Baird, who is also Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs, said he is determined to give young people more opportunities to have their say. “One of my passions is to ensure that young people are given more of a voice in everything we do – not only in this community but across the state.” MEDIA: Lisa Harrington – 0406 726 880 Write Comment
