Hypocrisy From NSW Govt As Jobs Disappear

Wed 18 March -  The Rees Govt has again today demonstrated its hypocrisy and inertia when it comes to saving jobs in NSW, said Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird.

“More than 200 people a day are finding themselves out of work in NSW.

“That adds up to 10,000 jobs lost since we announced our plan for a 15 per cent payroll tax cut to help businesses keep their staff.

“Yet Phil Costa, the Minister for Regional Development is today trumpeting a company creating 60 new jobs in Western Sydney, claiming it all had to do with payroll tax rebates.

“We welcome all new jobs in this state, but for the Government to be trying to claim this as a good news story must anger all those workers who today are being told – don’t come back tomorrow.

“How can there be any positive employment stories when NSW unemployment rate is at 5.8 per cent compared to the national figure of 5.2 per cent.

“This Labor Government is great at the photo opportunity, whether it be at a factory or at a jobs summit, but there is no action and not results.

“They seem frozen in time, unable to react to the reality around them.  As other governments both in Australia and overseas implement significant programs to assist families and workers get through the economic challenges, we have nothing but a tax increasing mini-budget from this Government. “We encourage the Govt to act now and adopt our 15% across-the-board payroll tax cut which would reduce NSW’s effective payroll tax rate to 4.89% making it one of the lowest in the nation.”

“This measure would keep almost $1 billion in the NSW business sector, the equivalent of almost 16,500 jobs.
