Many Questions Remain on Mini-Budget Backflip
Sunday, 01 February 2009

NSW Labor’s appalling track record on managing infrastructure raises questions about its ability to bring forward major projects, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

“We welcome the news that Premier Rees is to fast track infrastructure investment in NSW, and trust it is not too late given the damaging mini-budget decisions he made only three months ago.

“This is what the NSW Coalition has been calling for, as the cost of doing nothing is being seen in an increasing deficit and further job losses.

Despite this first step there remains significant question marks over Labor’s ability to deliver.

“I am concerned about the NSW government’s track record on major projects and thus have genuine concerns on their ability to deliver infrastructure.

“Independent oversight of the projects will be essential if they are to be delivered on time and on budget.

“The business community has lost confidence in the State Government’s ability to manage such projects, so Treasurer Roozendaal will have to demonstrate how this process is going to be different from the previous failures.

“In the current economic climate, NSW families cannot afford efforts to boost the economy being lost in further incompetent management.

“Treasurer Roozendaal has already lost control of the State Budget, which now looks like it will be $2 billion in the red. His lack of action in trying to protect jobs is in direct contrast to the NSW Coalition which has advocated for a 12 month cut in payroll tax and the need to bring forward infrastructure.

There are also critical question marks over the funding arrangements for existing let alone further infrastructure projects.

“The Rudd Government’s bank guarantee has already significantly increased the cost of funding for the State Government and many are questioning whether the existing programme can be funded at all.

“This needs to be a transparent and well managed process if it is to generate the economic stimulus the NSW economy needs. Throw away lines will not cut it, only hard work and diligence will,“ Shadow Treasure Mike Baird said.
