More Jobs Go In NSW - Time for Rees to Act
Wednesday, 11 February 2009

A lack of action by the Rees Labor Government in facing the economic crisis is costing local people their jobs, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

The jobless figures out today reveal unemployment in NSW has risen from 5.2 per cent to 5.4 per cent in January.

NSW has the second highest unemployment rate in the country, and compares with a national rate of 4.8 per cent.

An additional 38,000 Australians became unemployed in January – 10,300 of those in NSW.

“It is heartbreaking for the people of NSW that the number of people unemployed in this state is now consistently above the national figure,” Mr Baird said.

“NSW has become the state of inertia, with a Premier who believes he has no role to play in protecting jobs,” he said.

“The NSW Liberal/Nationals announced almost three weeks ago, a plan to reduce payroll tax by 15 per cent.

“This would benefit businesses which employ around 2 million people across the state.

“The measure would keep almost $1 billion in the NSW economy, the equivalent of almost 16,500 jobs.

“While we announced a positive plan, Mr Rees announced a plan for a summit to possibly come up with a plan.

“Once again, we encourage Premier Rees to adopt this policy for the sake of NSW workers.

“As every other government was introducing measures to boost the economy, the Rees Labor Government did the opposite, handing down a mini-Budget which is crippling the economy.

“Today’s unemployment figures are evidence of the damage caused by an inexperienced Premier and Treasurer who have refused to heed the warnings and proceeded with increasing taxes and cutting vital infrastructure projects.

“Mr Rees needs to act today to protect jobs in NSW, stimulate the economy and help businesses. He should start by adopting our payroll tax cut initiative,” Mr Baird said.

More Jobs Go !
Hello Mike,

I hope you are well.
I could not agree more with the present facts.
No jobs are being created. Why ?
Because Labour has NO ideas, simple.
Look after business so that they can look after workers.
Then workers will have a pay to spend.
No jobs, no pay, no spending.
Is it so hard for Labour to see such a simple matter ?
By the way I recently sent you my idea re: the super removale & Federal taking over 5% of it + 5 % cash over 12 months.
Any suggestions.
Keep well,
Albert.

Unemployment
I recall Paul Keating saying that 6% unemployment is full employment. He stated 2% were unemployable, 2% did not wish to work, and 2% were in the process of changing jobs.

Rees Must Act Now!
Why is not Premier Rees acting on the Tax proposal, does he want to see hundreds of jobs to go. What is his agenda, we all need to know and know NOW. Keep on their back Mike. Cheers Debra.

94% employment
Sorry to point out the obvious, but I think having over 90% employment rate is a real positive and many many things can help either increase this to 95% (which we have! wow that's impressive) or even better still support for people to be entrepreneal and operate their own cottage / home based businesses, which was the norm throughout history, until very recently.

The State Labor government has to go!
I completely agree, that this Labor government needs to go asap!
There has been too many years, of too much corruption (with too many cases to mention in here!) throughout all these years of those State Labor governments with "short-tunnel vision". Too much overall stagnation for the State that should be the most progressive in Australia, and now should be many miles ahead in many ways. NSW has taken the "reverse gear" instead.

The State Labor government has to go!
The payroll \" savings ? \" do not affect small business, so it may not improve jobs ?

UNFORTUNATELY, Barry O\'farrel\'s support for the METRO TUNNEL projects is JUST as FLAWED ( or more so if he is to offer an alternative ? to the aborted NW METRO TUNNEL ? ) .....

You are offerring to \" keep a $ billion in the hands of \"business \"

but maybe liberal transport ideas are
JUST WASTING it with a proposed METRO TUNNEL .. even after a former LIBERAL NSW leader supported the expansion of LIGHT RAIL to NW

Maybe an \" intergrated transport solution ?\"
for METRO SYDNEY = ? ??

but includes not having a MUA manned
fast-ferry from Manly .... and a expansion of that service to ? ?? ( = OK ? )

Labour mini budget
Like all Labour Governments they are not very interested in keeping jobs outside of the public service. I totally agree with your suggestion to reduce payroll tax but unfortunately Rees is not going to take any notice of you.
