Wed 18 March - It’s disappointing, but not surprising to see the figures out today show that more than 20,000 people abandoned NSW for another state last year, said Shadow Treasurer, Mike Baird. “When you consider the way Labor has mismanaged and rundown the state, it is no wonder that people are packing their bags and choosing another state in which to live. “The ABS Demographic Figures for the year to September 30 2008, show NSW had a negative net interstate migration of 22,400. “In contrast, 22,700 additional people moved to Queensland. Even Tasmania had positive net interstate migration with an additional 450 people. “People are fed up with what’s happened to their quality of life in NSW. “Crammed every day in an un-airconditioned train, stuck in a traffic jam having paid a toll, waiting for hours to be treated in an under-resourced hospital emergency department – this is what the people of NSW are having to endure. “And despite all the shortcomings on services and infrastructure, NSW people are paying the highest state taxes in the country. “The most recent unemployment figures also revealed that more than 200 people are day are losing their jobs in NSW, with an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent, well above the national figure of 5.2 percent. “Yet still there is no action from the Rees Government to restore confidence in the state and the economy so we can keep people in work. “They simply rejected outright the Liberal/Nationals proposal to cut payroll tax to assist in protecting jobs – yet since that announcement more than 10,000 jobs have been lost in this state. “We encourage the Govt to act now and adopt our 15% across-the-board payroll tax cut which would reduce NSW’s effective payroll tax rate to 4.89% making it one of the lowest in the nation so we can compete with the other states. “NSW must become competitive again or people will continue to flee to other states,“ said Mr Baird.
