The people of NSW face seeing their state hit hard by the Global Financial Crisis, thanks to the failed economic policies of the State Government, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.
“It is staggering that Premier Rees and Treasurer Roozendaal continue to go against the advice of leading economic and business leaders on how to manage the economic crisis.
“Today we have the Business Council of Australia warning of the risk of NSW running policies counter to the Federal Government,” Mr Baird said.
In its Budget Submission 2009-10, Budgeting Revival, the Business Council of Australia argues:
‘Australia cannot afford to have state governments running fiscal policies that work against growth. Now is the time to abolish lingering state taxes, not to lift taxes’. (BCA Budget Submission 2009-10, Budgeting for Revival, p.19)
“The BCA in particular criticised the policies of the NSW government as working against the efforts of the Federal Government to stimulate the economy,” Mr Baird said.
“When will Premier Rees realise that he hasn’t a clue when it comes to managing the state’s economy.
“His mini-budget was the complete opposite of what is needed to protect jobs in NSW.
“Instead of stimulating the economy, Premier Rees was hitting families and businesses with more taxes.
“In contrast, the Liberal/Nationals have put forward a plan to cut payroll tax by 15% for 2009, which is directly targeted at supporting two-thirds of the NSW workforce.
“This would be a 12 month measure, providing specific and immediate relief.
“This proposal is in line with the BCA Budget Submission which advocates targeted and temporary policy initiatives to support economic growth, unlike the failed Labor mismanagement,” Mr Baird said.
