350 Boeing Jobs Fly to Melbourne
Thursday, 04 March 2010

News that Boeing is to close its aerospace engineering plant in Sydney’s West is another blow to the NSW economy, which is already struggling with the nation’s highest unemployment rate, NSW Opposition Leader and Shadow Minister for Western Sydney Barry O’Farrell and Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

Boeing has announced today 350 jobs will be lost when it closes its Milperra plant near Bankstown Aerodrome. 300 of those jobs will go to Melbourne, while at least 50 people will be made redundant.

“This is yet another blow to the struggling NSW economy which has had Australia’s highest unemployment rate for virtually four straight years,” Mr O’Farrell said.

The blow follows the closure of the Pacific Brands factory last year costing nearly 600 jobs and Qantas moving nearly 500 maintenance jobs in Sydney to regional Victoria in 2007.

“Kristina Keneally needs to reveal what action she’s taken to attempt to save these jobs, if any at all,” he said.

“This is exactly why the NSW Liberals & Nationals have been proposing a payroll tax cut of up to 20% to retain jobs and investment in NSW.

“While Victorian Premier John Brumby will be boasting at trumping NSW again, Kristina Keneally is left offering the same old excuses for her Government’s failure.

Mr Baird said it’s one thing for Ms Keneally to engage in constant media stunts, but it doesn’t make up for hard work. It hasn’t saved these 350 families their jobs.

“Those families now face the unenviable choice of losing their jobs or uprooting their family and moving to Melbourne,” he said.

"There continues to be a cost to not supporting business in this State and we should not forget that underneath the unemployment statistics are families like these today who must front tomorrow without jobs."
