'Major Economic Stimulus' Nothing But Spin
Thursday, 03 September 2009

Premier Nathan Rees yesterday admitted the total handouts given to first home buyers in the Government’s major stimulus package is $2.8 million, similar to the amount it spent on ads promoting the State Budget, said Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird.

“The Premier has revealed the Government’s cornerstone stimulus measure cost about the same as its advertising campaign spruiking the State Budget,” Mr Baird said.

“Only $2.8 million has been given out to first home buyers as part of the NSW Housing Construction Acceleration Plan*, while $2 million was spent on State Budget ads**,” he said.

“This shows the Rees Labor Government is all about spinning headlines on Budget day – its priorities are all wrong.

“The stamp duty savings were trumpeted by the Government as a ‘major economic stimulus’***, yet it equates to a mere 0.0007% of total stamp duty revenue.

“The Premier has admitted only 377 people have been helped by the Government’s ‘major’ stimulus package.

“Any credit the Rees Labor Government has tried to take for turning the economy around has been shot down today.

“This week the Treasurer gloated about ‘green shoots’ in the NSW economy – well it’s now clear the Rees Labor Government has had no input whatsoever.

“In two months the Rees Labor Government spent only $2.8 million on its Housing Construction Acceleration Plan, after claiming it would be worth $64 million over six months.

“At this rate, the Government will only spend $8.4 million on its ‘major economic stimulus’ package.

“The NSW Government will receive $4 billion in stamp duty revenue this year, however it can only manage to give $2.8 million to first home buyers as part of its major stimulus package,” Mr Baird said.

Yes, the state budget hasn't had much of a hit, has it? Of course, on the other hand, they didn't get much from the federal government for stimulus infrastructure projects - because none were ready to go, and the stimulus plan required projects ready for quick commencement. This wasn't the case for our hospitals either, despite years of "planning". This goes to show that the few millions that have been allocated so far for hospital planning have been wasted, or the Frenchs Forest hospital could have qualified for an infrastructure grant.
We need to find out just where this money has gone - just who is doing the planning, and what have they done so far? We need to make the public service (or whomever has been handed the task) accountable for the money spent, so we can either get the job done or at least stop the waste.
Sorry to make this a rant about wasted money, but the Northern Beaches must surely return a decent slice of the stamp duty pie to state coffers (amongst other state taxes - Mike, can you confirm?), and we're definitely not getting anywhere near our share in return. Sure, I'm still happy to subsidise areas that need assistance, but this appears out of all proportion.

Economic Stimulus "Nothing but spin"
Mike

Absolutely right and no doubt its just giving the appearance of doing something.

However, I would like to know what the Coalition are offering. Even if you don't have access to the Treasury books, it would be helpful to start hearing some broad parametres of what you intend to do.

Nothing but spin !
Hello Mike,

The present Gov. is in time with Aug/Sept. time, full of wind.
At least federal knows about it & no point giving NSW any more funds. They would not know how to account for it ? Would they?
Where is the money going.
Mind you in your messages, it would be nice to not only show the faults but also be showing your ideas. It has to be there, not for us to look for it.
Nice to see also some action from Barry as well as Malcolm in the Southern Highlands.
Keep in mind the idea of promoting the S.Highlands for business. The North shore could do with some similar project.
Keep well,
Albert
